July 10, 200421 yr I believe time will show that the Catalyst 4.7's are a very good driver set. Most folks who have tried them are quite pleased. DNA has released his version of tweaked 4.7's, and there are a number of outstanding shots in the Screenshot forum to prove how nice they are. Certainly, the Omegaised 4.7's will be ready in a few days and they're sure to be as good as we've come to expect them to be. Being an Omega fan, I was a bit reluctant to try a different tweaked driver package (haven't had any great luck with the DNA's in the past), but I decided to try the latest UniAN offering.UniAN is yet another tweaked drivers option (better to have too many options than too few) we have to choose from. I've been testing them in the sim for the past few hours, and I'm quite impressed with them. Their installation was as easy as the Omega's (read: no seperate Control Panel install like the stock Catalysts), and that's always a welcome trait. Their speed is on par with the Omega 4.6's I've been running the past few weeks, maybe a tiny bit faster. The FPS stay a bit more consistent as well. What impressed me the most about the UniAN's is the speed that ground textures load. Even those who own very fast systems have experienced the occasional slow loading ground tile. It can be rather distracting when all else in the sim is performing well. With the UniAN's I saw no slow loading texture tiles. None. Also, the AF clearly looks better than anything I've seen in past driver sets. I can see objects on the ground from farther away (a very desirable sim trait when you're trying to go "eyes fixed" on your small destination airport laying out there somewhere in the country side). Color saturation is on par with the Omega's (outstanding), and Chris's clouds look even better with the UniAN's than they did with the Omega's.Another advantage of the UniAN drivers is that the end user has the option of installing a Glide wrapper. Those who have old games based on the Glide API will certainly appreciate this feature. For those who don't play Glide games, simply say no to the option when the installation presents it to you. Thus far I'm quite pleased with the UniAN tweaked drivers. I'll continue testing them, but I look forward to enjoying my enhanced simming experience. For those who wish to try them go here: http://www.hardwaremax.it/categoria.asp?id...0ATI&p=downloadDo yourself a favor and properly remove and clean previous drivers from your system before installing new ones. For those interested in a good tutorial on removing old drivers, go here: http://www.driverheaven.net/showthread.php?threadid=8053As always, your mileage may vary with any new driver.Greg
July 10, 200421 yr Stay away from DNA drivers. His drivers always sacrifies image quality for speed and is just about always worse than omegas or default CAT drivers. I would suggest Omega.
July 10, 200421 yr Originally the DNA's were tweaked for performance at the cost of IQ. Use to be that users had to make a choice--- performance or IQ--- but as ATI continues to mature and refine their drivers (coupled with faster and more capable hardware) we can have a nice combination of both these days. Killersneak (DNA) has thus moved somewhat away from pure performance to optimizing for IQ at a good speed. Omega has done much the same, though DNA has clearly been the follower and Omega the leader here. Omega has always tweaked drivers for IQ. I never had good luck with the older DNA's, but some of the screenshots I've seen the past few days convince me that they are a good (if not innovative... he doesn't do anything that he hasn't learned from guys like Omega) option.Another major factor in all this is the fact that ATI formally recognizes Omega. The two work together. Many folks in the past were afraid to try the Omega's because they believed they were hacked drivers. This is no longer the case, and anyone interested in top quality drivers would do well to look first at the Omega's. He has the full support of ATI. I doubt that ATI will ever recognize DNA... his antics within the community have left him on the outside looking in.I've heard and read nice things about the UniAN team. They seem to have their feet firmly planted on the ground, and they clearly make some nice tweaks to the Cats. Hopefully in time they too will be reognized by ATI. We the end users will only benefit if they are.Greg
July 11, 200421 yr You do realize that Killersneak more or less copy/steals Omegas work? He has even himself admitted it in the past. That is also why DNA drivers are always released some days after the Omega drivers. And chatting with Killersneak is not a pleasuring thing either. That guy is so god damn full of himself and his drivers are purely crap. What about disable vsync in the drivers to boost 20 fps in Call of Duty? the only problem is you get tearing. And do the same with the Omega drivers you get even better performance in COD?UniAN I know nothing about but I surely know how crappy and redundant DNA drivers are.
July 11, 200421 yr Yeah, I'm aware of KS's reputation. Was reading the other day at a forum that he does all his tweaks in Wordpad. WordPad!! Evenso, his latest drivers (based on the 4.7's) look great. He's learning, but he's sacrificed alot of support from within the ATI community (and he hasn't endeared himself to ATI when he removed their copyright in the CATs to be replaced by his own. Sheesh!).Greg
