Best Current Card for AGP 4X

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,As a new member, this post might qualify me to be around for 90 days or so.In any event, I have a 4X AGP slot on my current Intel motherboard. I would like your opinion on the best such (obsolescent) card to override the onboard graphics. The processor is a 2.8 Mhz P4, 1Gb of memory. Am I correct in thinking that a more current 8X AGP card would be a waste of money? Thanks very much.

Hi,Get an AGP 8x card if you want. There isn't much difference at all running between 4x or 8x AGP. I think it's because most apps/games don't make use of the extra bandwith provided by 8x. I run my ATI Radeon card in either 4x or 8x AGP mode and don't see any difference in performance. The best bang for the buck right for your system would be to get an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB or a 9800 XT 256 MB card. If you like Nvidia then I think your best bet would be to get GeForce 5950.If your wanting something even older then I am not certain. But I think maybe an ATI Radeon 9600 XT 256 MB or an Nvidia Ti4600 but you'd probably be a little happier if you can afford one of the newer ones I listed above, and they are considered(more or less) obsolete at this point due to the release of the ATI X800 series and the Nvidia 6800 series of cards.Regards,Jim

Yes unless you get an X800XT or 6800 ULTRA or something you will don

Hello,Thanks very much for the responses. I'll check those cards out.Fred Yale
