Any real advantage to having a second monitor?

Featured Replies

I'm running 2 21" monitors on a P4 2.4GHz computer with 512MB DDR PC2700 RAM and a Abit GeForce Ti4200. It tends to be more difficult to use dual monitors with FS2004 than not, especially when I want to just jump in for a quick flight. I'm debating taking one of the monitors off to set up another computer in the home. That leads me to ask... is there any performance decrease from running two monitors, and would I notice an increase should I take one of the monitors off?Eventually, I'm looking to replace at least one of the 21" monitors with a new one, as they are both kinda dated and blurry.Ken

" It tends to be more difficult to use dual monitors with FS2004 than not, especially when I want to just jump in for a quick flight."Not sure what you mean by the above statement- I'm running 2 monitors and find it makes life much easier - not just for FS9 but other things also. With FS you can put the GPS etc on the 2nd monitor - thus keeping the main screen uncluttered.I can't say I have noticed any difference in performance using either 1 or 2 monitors- may depend on how you have them set up. Mine are set to be independant - separate resolution/ refresh rate etc.Dave

It surely affects performance some since the video card has to render more. But it should be pretty minimal depending on what you choose to display on it :) Now a 21" just for gps or other stuff would be quite overkill. Maybe time to replace it for a fancy TFT and use that as a second monitor :). Then if you use it for GPS or instruments you can buy a real cheap ghosting one with VGA connection doesn

Dave,I've got 2 monitors too - great for Photoshop and other graphics progs -but - I'm having great difficulty using 2 monitors in FS9. I can't undock the GPS or other elements to the other screen. In FS2002 I could open maps etc onto the second monitor but not now with FS9. Sometimes when fiddling about with the setup I can get the picture to span the 2 monitors but that's not what I want. How do you manage? I'm using an ATI card now instead of my usual NVidia - can't say I'm overly impressed!Kev

KevYou have to be in Windows mode on FS9 (at least I have to)- right click the GPS and select Undock then just drag.If this isn't happening then maybe you haven't set the monitors up correctly-- you should have in the Display properties "extend my Desktop to this monitor" selected for the slaveDave

Dave,Thanks - I'll experiment with that tonight when I get home - do you have to stay in windows mode or can you go full screen?Kev

You can go to full screen after undocking - I don't as I normally run in windowed mode with the top menu and bottom taskbar hidden.Dave
