Disk defragmenter problems

Featured Replies

when i disk defrag my c drive an error message shows up:Some files on this volume could not be defragmented. Please check the defragmentation report for the list of these files. But when I check the report for the files that did not defragment, there are no files on the list. Is there any solution around this??Thanks in advance

Run scandisk first, with `automatically fix errors` checked.Allcott

Hi,Some files cannot be defragmented/moved while online and this will depend on operating system constraints. Examples are the Pagefile, certain system files like the MFT (Master File Table) and, on FAT/FAT32 formatted drives, directories are also treated as offline files. I can only speak for Windows XP and can say that I was able to defragment the Pagefile and the MFT offline (during boot time) when I invested in a superb defragmenter called 'PerfectDisk'.Mike

Yes, I use Diskeeper Professional myself. This offers boottime defragmentation whcih automatically defrags both those files, as well as many others that a Windows defrag can't manage. But you CAN defrag the Page File in Windows - delete the page file, reboot, run defrag, reinstate page file, reboot, run defrag again. But the Master File Table does require an aftermarket package as I dont know of any way to get Win XP to do that manually!Allcott
