Video Card / LCD Screen Resolution Question.

For any video card and monitor combination, does the maximum screen resolution that can be set in the computer dependant upon the monitor as well as the video card? I use the DVI input on my LCD screen, and notice that I can't get to 1600*1200 screen resolution (I have yet to try the analogue input of the monitor- Sony 18" LCD). Video card is an ATI 9800 Pro 128MB.Thanks, Bruce.
