RADEON 9600 PRO reboot problem

Featured Replies

Hello,After 2 months working very fine, now I have the following problem: after a variable period of time (from few seconds to several minutes) using FS9 or whatever PC game (Train Simulator, Motorboat Simulator,...) my system suddenly reboots. This only occurs with PC games not in others applications such as Internet Explorer, Word, Excel, etc. Besides, during the games and specially after the reboot I notice a rare burnt smell.Surprisingly, my system has passed satisfactory all kinds of tests.I don't know what's happened. Can anyone help me?Best regards,Pilotmar.MY SYSTEM:P4 3.2 GHz 800 MHz1024 Mb RAM (2xDDR 512 Mb PC-400)GECUBE ATI RADEON 9600 PRO 256Catalyst 4.12Box P4 400WWindows XP home edition SP2

Pilotmar, you said it -- "after the reboot I notice a rare burnt smell" !!!My first guess is check the power supply fans right away and avoid running the computer if at all possible except perhaps very briefly to troubleshoot.Hopefully none of your components are already fried but that is a distinct possibility. :-/Heat is building up over a period of time until some component in the system overheats causing a reboot (overheating WILL cause a reboot).Complex PC games like FS9 put a heavy work load on your CPU and graphics and will heat up your system much more quickly than Explorer or Word. The time until overheat will vary based on many factors such as ambient temp., how hot your system initially was when you first loaded FS9, and how you're using FS9.If you're overclocking the CPU and/or graphics card, you might want to scale that back right away. Check ALL fans inside of your computer for any that are not working including power supply, CPU, and graphics card. Check for dust buildup especially around the fans and heat exchangers. You should not smell anything burning.
