Radeon 9600SE problems

Featured Replies

Ok, here's the results of not getting quick response to a help request in this forum. I asked earlier what would be a good card for upgrading the ATI 9200SE card I was using and got no response so I went out on my own. Went to Frys Electronics and they had the 9200SE card available and a few that were discounted by a few bucks after being returned and tested. I bought one of those, brought it home and got terrible screen resolution out of the thing. Even the text on initial bootup had this colored halo around it and was nearly unreadable. Brought it back and bought one of their new ones figuring the discounted one was simply defective. Now, the haloing is much better but I am unable to get the card to recognize my second monitor, something my 9200SE card did without a hiccup. I've downloaded the latest drivers and Catalyst Control Center software from ATI, completely uninstalled and reinstalled everything a few times and still no luck. The second monitor, which is connecting to the DVI port on the card through an adapter, never even responds to its activation and the control center stops trying. Now, FS runs extremely fast with this new card so obviously it's a good piece of basic hardware but my whole idea in upgrading wasn't just about better FPS but to be able to use the dual monitors without bringing FS to its knees. Help please. Do I return this card and save up for something better?Art Martin

I think there is some software that should of come on the catalyst cd that deals with 2 monitors. I think its the Control Center. Ill look around and see if i can find something. the 9600xt is a great card. I like mine alot. Next card for me is the X800 256MB :):-wave

I'm more and more suspecting another bad card actually. One would think the second monitor would come on during bootup regardless of how it's configured within Windows and that's simply not happening as it did with my old 9200SE card. I think the DVI port's shot but I'm waiting for response from ATI's tech support on that one. Anyone have any experience with them?Art Martin

Have a new hunch. Is there any difference between a DVI port and a DVI-I port? I believe the new 9600SE card has a DVI-I port and my old card was simply labeled as a DVI. I'm thinking my adapter that I bought to go to a standard VGA cable might be the culprit. Any clues there?Art

Just some basic things, in case that you've forgotten.1. When you look at the opening screen of "Display Properties" do you see both monitors.2. Did you remember to put a check mark in the "Extend my Windows Desktop onto this mpnitor" box.3. I use Omega drivers so this may be different but I have a tab marked "Displys" under then advaced settings. It shows where monitors are attached, how they are recognized, thre resolution, etc. I'm sure there is such a disply with the ATI drivers.I hope that this helps. R-

Ron, you do see both monitors but as soon as you set the checkmark and hit "Apply", the box becomes unchecked and it reverts back to being not attached. Downloaded new drivers yesterday from ATI and waiting on my inquiry about the adapter.Art
