Motherboard and PCI Express connections

Featured Replies

Hello everyoneI have the Intel motherboard D915GAV and the PCI Express card GeForce N6600.In the motherboard, besides the 2 Power connections (Main power 2x12 connector and ATX12V power 2x2 connector) there is an “Alternative power” 1x4 connector. It the manual it says that this connector provides additional power when using high wattage PCI Express x16 graphics cards. My question is if I should connect this Alternative power to my Power supply. Does my card ( N6600) requires this connection? Stelios

I had a similar question a couple of years ago when I put a system together. I had plugged in the two power connections to the MB (normal for older systems), powered my system up, and it ran great. But every so often it had problems booting but always seemed to boot after turning it on/off a few times. It took me a few weeks but I figured I was missing a connection somewhere and decided to RTM (ugh!!!) and it mentioned a 3d connection to the MB, near the center of the MB, which is required to power the newer video cards. I plugged it in and waa laa everything worked great from then on. So, if you have only used 2 connections so far, you'll need to plug in the 3rd one too. As I recall it had a one half inch square male/female connection coming from the power supply. Hope this helps some.Jim
