July 19, 200520 yr If I were to copy the contents of a VERY fragmented partition to another partition or drive. Quick format that partition. Then copy back the contents to the original partition.Would all the files etc......be now completely DEFRAGGED? Or does the recopying retain all the fragmentation? All thoughts are welcome.ThanksAbe
July 19, 200520 yr I think it would still be fragged, just run MS defragger, thats a good start, it takes a long time tho so let it run over night.
July 19, 200520 yr Abe,The files would, in fact, be defragged just as you wanted but, unfortunately, the file allocation table (the FAT is the 'table of contents for the disk) would still contain the old file locations and files would essentially be lost. DO NOT TRY THIS PROCEDURE for defragging your disk! Please use a defragging program.Regards, John
July 20, 200520 yr Author Thanks John and Andras.Curiosity could have killed the cat(LOL).I'll heed your advice. I will NOT use this method of defragging. I'll stick to the much more conventional method of a defragging program. Thanks again for a valuable advice.Abe
