FS2004 mip map Quality setting ATI 9800 pro

Featured Replies

Hi all,I seem to be having lots of shimmering textures. I am using the ATI 9800 Pro 128mb video card with the ATI 5.10 drivers. I installed these drivers fresh with no previous drivers installed. The problem is this, when I go to FS2004 and set the mip map quality to 8x from 4x, I get more shimmering. When I go to 3x the shimmering is less, I was thinking that with 8x I should have less shimmering but maybe I got it mixed up. I am using a resolution of 1152 by 864 by 32. My taxi way signs are dancing all over as well as the mountains when I fly to British Columbia when I use 4x.thanks a bunch,

The Mipmap setting is actually centereed around 4. There's no reason to use anything less than 3 or anything more than 5. Certainly, at 8 you get an extremely high LOD bias causing shimmers and sometimes reducing performance significantly. At 3 or less, you'll start to get extremely blurry textures. It's a bit hard to explain without going into the details of how mipmapping works, try e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MipmappingAlso make sure you're using 8x Anisotropic filtering with the highest mipmap quality setting in the actual ATI control panel. Also check out http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...ing_type=search for a fix for the shimmering autogen trees, fences and other alpha textures.
