November 4, 200520 yr So, I split my 120 gig HD into C & D. Is C drive closer to the inside? Not that it matters if the drive reads faster in the middle. Where is C drive physically located.JimCYWG
November 4, 200520 yr C is closer to the middle, thus faster. Closer the data is to the center of the drive, faster it gets read.

The drive reads faster on the external border of the plate. Its easy to understand why : there is about twice as much linear space on the outer plate border than on the the inner border. This space is used by twice as much sectors. During one revolution, the head reads twice as much data. The closer to the center you go, the less sectors are read per revolution. The plate revolution speed is constant at 7200 rpm.Eric.
