XP Windows Update / ATI Driver Conflict:

Featured Replies

Yesterday, 12/15/05 I received two automatic windows updates with the following results:1. Installed: "Security Update for Windows XP (KB905915)" and "Update for Windows XP (KB896424)"2. Immediately after installation, I had an error window pop up which stated: "This display driver is not compatible with the display adapter in your system." Everything looked normal with the exception of the message, and I could not bring up my Catalyst Control Center.3. Went to the ATI site and discovered that the Catalyst 5.12 drivers were available. Downloaded them. Presently useing the Catalyst 5.9 drivers with the Catalyst Control Center. Thought maybe the latest were required.4. Preceded to remove my present Catalyst 5.9 Drivers, along with the Catalyst Control Center. My method was as I have done many times to disconnect from my NIC card, use the XP Control panel add/remove provisions for deletion, and reboot in safe mode. I canceled any automatic installation of default drivers from windows. (Note: later I simply tried the ATI Catalyst Removal Tool and everything else I could think of with no good results).5. Ran Driver Cleaner (including Cab Cleaner)and emptied the Recycle Bin.6. Activated the download for the Catalyst 5.12 driver. After the step where "Express" installation appears, I again got the error window "This display driver is not compatible with the display adapter in your system." I could not install the drivers.7. Individually, I tried installation of a number of previous Cayalyst driver versions and got the same error. I also tried in safe mode.8. Fortunately, System Restore still works and I was able to restore to the point before the Windows updates were installed. (Note: With or without the Windows Updates, I now get the same miserable results).9. I regret to say that I do not remember exactly how I got these items, but in this process I also got some relative readings: "Flight One Iron Knuckles DC9" and "The Vans Aircraft Company - Boeing 727-200 QW The Final Stage 1st Century." (Don't know what this latter one is?)10. This morning I started over. The only change is that if I install the Windows updates, I do not immediately get the error message (at least not so far).11. One more item: My Catalyst Control Center will not start up. I have had this problem before with much older drivers, but that was some time ago, never with the version 5.9 until this happened.12. Results: No Control Center availability with the present drivers. If I try to reinstall, or install any other Catalyst version, I get the error message and cannot install it.Has anyone else seen this problem, or have any ideas?Thanks:RTHP4C800 Deluxe MotherboardPentium 4, 3.2G CPU1G PC3200/400 MemoryWinXP ProDirectX9.0cATI Radeon 9800Pro 128MBSecondary Graphics Diamond Stealth III S540 PCI 21
