Gfx update question

Featured Replies

Hi hardware guys,I have a question regarding my current configuration and the results of a possible gfx card upgrade.Current config:- Asus A7N8X DeLuxe- AMD Athlon XP 2600+- 2GB DDR400 - Asus V7100 SDRAM Gfx card (A real oldy)- 2 x WD 160GB HDD- CD-RW and DVD-RW driveAs long as I do not use too much detail FS9 runs OK. But when I increase the level of detail, the framerates drop below 5fps.So, now for the big question: Will an upgrade of my gfx to an "ASUS N6800XT/TD, 128MB" on AGP 8x will yield to significantly better fps results in complex environments?Daan

in a short answer yes you should see a big improvement in the games performance. Looking at your rig's specs it looks good there were two things that would be slowing you down the vid card, of course and the cpu, but like i said in an another post you will see an instant improvement visually and in the frame rates if you get a newer card.Paul

Your rig is similar to my sons, except he has a radeon 9800 pro powering the graphics side of things. His is not quite as smooth as my rig in my sig (I should hope not!) and he doesn't have all sliders to the right, but the resultant performance of his rig is pretty dang fine overall. Certainly much faster and prettier than when he had a Geforce 3 in his system. As such, I recommend either a 9800 pro or, for a few bucks more, a Geforce 6600 as the best match for your other hardware.Just to add, when I upgraded from a 9800 pro to a 6800 GT, there was barely an improvement in framerates in complex areas. The X800 I recently bought is a little more noticable, but I still get FPS in the low teens sometimes in really graphically intense areas. The saving grace with my X800 is I can watch TV during cruise! Bottom line is that there are rapidly diminishing performance returns on anything over a 9800 pro or GF 6600 on a system like yours.Gary

Thanks for your inmput! If I understand correctly I can better buy the 'ASUS N6600/TD, 256 MB' gfx card than the 'ASUS N6800XT/TD, 128MB' mentioned in the first post. The first card is 30 euro's cheaper, despite the larger RAM.Am I correct here?Best regards,Daan

the 6600 and the 6800 are two different cards. N6800 has more performance, more pipes and clock and ram speed, than the N6600 even though you are correct it does have more memory. hope it helpsPaul

i found the chart, old yes, but its showing fs 2004 as a benchmark with the agp cards...http://www.tomshardware.com/2004/10/04/vga_charts_iv/page11.htmlthe comparison might help you decide on what card is better for you.Paul
