March 6, 200620 yr For months I have had a problem with my new setup consisting of a AMD X2 4400 + nVidia 6600GT (also tested with nVidia 6800XT). I could FS for 10 minutes to 45 minutes without problem but then suddenly the computer would 'hardlock' which could only be resolved by a reboot. This thread is a gathering off 'solutions' I found until now. The most recent fix I tried is using the Beta Driver + registry Fix. Until now I had no crashes but I have not been able to test much.Be aware that the described problem could also indicate a hardware problem in your machine. That is the reason that it has taken this much time to get the problem to the attention of nVidia. In case of stability problems always checkout your drivers and the stability of your powersupply first. Try to test with other hardware to confirm that its not your graphics card that is broken. If you've done all that and still have the problem then join me and get mad at nVidia for not admitting this problem earlier and flame them for their crappy drivers. (<- I'm sorry but I'm still a bit angry with them)So the most recent solution I came across is using the new Beta drivers (http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_downloads_rel70betadriver.html) together with the following registry fix:There may be intermittent application compatibility issues with dual core CPUs.If you experience this issue, you can work around it by toggling off multithread optimizations using the following instructions:1 Launch regedit and determine the current primary display card by looking inHKey_Local_MachineHardwareDe viceMapVideoand note the GUID (global unique identifier assigned by Windows),which is the long string in brackets { } at the end of the entrydevicevideo02 Look inHKey_Local_MachineSYSTEMCurr entControlSetControlVideo{GUID}0000where {GUID} is the number derived from the previous step.3 Open the ʺ0000ʺ directory and create a new DWORD calledOGL_ThreadControl and give it a value of 2.This will disable multithreading in the driver for all OpenGL applications.4 If you want to disable driver multithreading for all Direct3D applications
