Problem for Nvidia experts

Featured Replies

I am stuck for the forseeable future with PCI video: the motherboard on my computer will not accept PCIe or AGP. For the last two years, I have been using the Xtasy Radeon 9100 with 128 Mb. Yesterday, I installed 3D Fuzion's GeForce 6200 with 128 Mb. (Yes, there is one for PCI.)I've noticed four problems:1. Random black rectangles in normal Windows programs. -- Some people reported that updating the driver to 84.20 or above fixed this problem. It hasn't for me, but that's not what I'm writing to this group about.2. When I fire up FS9, I do notice smoother video and somewhat better FPS than I was getting with the ATI 9100. But in the Create Flight and Choose Aircraft screens, the spinning aircraft isn't there -- just a big black space. Through experiment, I've found that I can get the spinning aircraft to appear in two ways: by alt-entering to windowed mode, or by reducing my resolution (in display settings hardware) from 1024x768 to 800x600. Trouble with reducing resolution is obvious. Trouble with switching back and forth between windowed and full-screen modes is...it crashes the whole machine (blue screen of "A problem has been detected...nv4_disp cause of shutdown"). I've been running WinXP Pro for almost three years, and this almost NEVER happens to me.3. When I am in a flight, and I access one of the options screens (to change aircraft or fiddle with display properties, for example), it takes a long time, and I hear a lot of disk access. This didn't happen at all with my Radeon 9100 -- I'd just switch screens and there wouldn't be a delay of more of a second. The monitor doesn't show any signs of switching display modes, but clearly something is being reconfigured in moving back and forth between the menu screens and the flying screen.4. Instant replay is noticeably smoother -- after it gets going. Again, there's a long pause to get out of "flying" mode and into "adjust settings" mode. Then, it takes several seconds for the replay itself to get straightened out. The sound is going and the plane is moving, but the video is super-jerky for about 5 seconds. Then it's smooth. I'm guessing this has something to do with the moving back and forth between flying and menu mode problem that I described in #3.I'm guessing that #2, #3, and #4 are all related. I have tried four different drivers with no success: 77.77, 84.20, 84.21, and 84.43. I am wondering: is there a line I can add to the display card section of my fs9.cfg that will fix this? (Cf. the tablefog=0 line for some Radeon cards.)System specs: Dell Dimension 2300, 1 gig RAM, P4 2.2 MHz, WinXP Pro SP1, DirectX ver. 9.0c, 3D Fuzion GeForce 6200 PCI 128 Mb.Thank you for reading so far, and for any suggestions you can offer.

I'd first recommend backing up your existing FS9.cfg file and then destroying it... sometimes FS9 needs to recreate it's file for things to work right. It will blow out any customizations you've done, but that's why you created the backup, just in case...I have seen the black hole for the spinning aircraft problem on various drivers when I set the AA up to it's highest level (in the driver settings area). If you have it all the way up, knock it down a peg and see if that makes a difference.-Greg

Thanks for both suggestions, Greg. I have just tried:1. Letting FS9 rebuild fs9.cfg. <-- No effect on spinning AC problem2. Reducing AA (to none) <-- No effect on spinning AC problemIf it were just the spinning AC problem, I could probably live with it. It's the stuttering when starting to replay, the long delay when doing anything with the menus again (related, I think, to the replay problem) that really get me down, and make me think there's some basic thing that's wrong.
