New HD and XP/FS9 install......help?!?

Featured Replies

Hi All,I have now got a 160GB drive to install and replace my main 60GB Windows XP drive with FS9 installed....and this is where i've come to a problem.I've got 24gb in my FS9 folder (and its still growing!!) and, if i can help it, i'd rather not have to re-install things such as add-ons, freeware aircraft and such all over again. It's worth noting here that the add-ons installed include Ground Environment, Active Sky, Flight Environment etc. that have regitsry keys associated with them.Is it at all posisble to a new install the 160GB with XP and FS9, THEN copy the contents of my existing FS9 folder, inclusive of add-ons, to the new FS9 install on the 160GB drive - or would i need to backup/transfer the registry keys from the existing Windows registry also?If anybody knows how i can go about doing this, or if its even possible, please do tell me!Many many thanks for any help in advance.Simon

Unfortunately that is not recommended, unless you are an absolute pro and know what your doing and dissect everything from you FS9/addon installations and backup/restore. That will most likely take your hours/days and a fresh install of FS9 with addons would take far less time. I'd keep the 60GB drive and install WindowsXP on that drive and then use the 160GB for programs and data only. Do some clever partitioning of the 160GB drive and re-install.I have 2 HDDs in my main computer, 160GB drive (20GB WinXP, 20GB WinVista, 120GB Programs and data) and a 60GB for Linux, but I backup/forward all my data (My Documents) to a Linux server with 2x160GB RAID1 array.Good luck.

I have just about finished doing a complete reinstall of FS9 myself.Reinstalled everything from scratch. You would be supprised at how much better it runs after a fresh install. It seems daunting at first but just break it down into little chunks and it will go smoothly. I started with all mesh and enviroment upgrades then scenery and then aircraft. Also you will have a chance to decide what you may not really want to add.Just my opinion.beaver1 :-)
