Strange noise fromradeon X1600 pro

Featured Replies

Hello everyone. Yesterday I replaced my radeon 9800 pro with a Sapphire X1600 pro agp.Everything works fine exept one thing. When I am in 2D or 3D cockpit view, a strange sound comes from the card (not the speakers). The sound looks like a clock ticking but much faster and in higher pitch. The sound is not from the fan and it doesn't happen in the other FS views. I tried a few other games and I didn't have the same problem that's why I decided to post in this forum. I removed and reinstalled the card, I reinstalled the drivers, I installed older drivers, I even removed and reinstalled fs bun nothing changed. My pc is:Athlon xp 3200+, asus a7n8x deluxe, sapphire radeon x1600 pro agp with catalyst 6.6, 1 GB Kingston ram,HDD 120 GB maxtor sata, win xp pro with sp2.Can you please help me?Thanks in advanse.

You're not alone, apparently some X1??? -series cards exhibit this problem. In some cases it's the fan revving up and revving down rapidly (which it shouldn't do, obviously, as it'll eventually die) and in some cases it's an electronic component that's not properly seated.I didn't read through the whole thread, but here's a long one about similar problems:http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33843512From what I could tell, the solution was to take the card back and have it replaced until you get one that doesn't make the noise (but as I noted, I only read parts of the thread, not the whole thing).

Most likely it is the fan bearing dying or the fan gyrating in its case.

I read over the thread and from the sounds of it, it would appear that the DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) is making noise when the card is plugged into a CRT. This has been a common problem with ATI for a long time, but it used to show up under low resolution not high. The only way I could fix it was to force the refresh rate in the ATI control panel to be the same as the desktop's (for all possible resolutions), but the ATI CP (or CCC) seems to have issues with maintaining them if you are running dual monitors that are not identical.Cheersshad
