Vista RC1 and buzzing noise

Featured Replies

Hi,I currently have Vista RC1 installed (get the retail version on Friday).I've seen something strange - in certain views (could be 2D, 3D, or external), I sometimes get a kind of buzzing noise. At first I thought a wire was brushing up against a fan, but I rerouted my cables and all is clear.I did a little checking on the net and saw some things about setting the power settings in Vista to performance versus a lower setting. This seemed to do the trick, but the noise has returned a few times today.Does anybody know about this? What is chattering? Is it the video card, memory sticks, CPU?I have an Antec 650 watt power supply, only 2 SATA drives, an ATI X1950 video card, and an Audigy LS sound card - I certainly have plenty of power, and I have an Antec gaming case with so many fans, I get cold just sitting by the case.Any insight would be appreciated, but I also wonder if this will be resolved when my retail version of Vista arrives on Friday. Thanks,Jim

Jim, Sorry, but I don't have much help to offer you but I would like to know what drivers you are using. I'm having issues with Vista RC1 and my X1950XT card (see my post of a couple days ago: http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...d=23247&page=2). It seems I may have heard a similar buzzing sound from my system but it did not distract me enough to take notice of it. I will pay more attention in the near future and see if I can offer you some advice. Thanks,Dan

Oh noes! Itz the miCrosofts in ur computerz eatin' ur megahurtz and inventoryin' ur programz! Could it be one of your fans spinning a little faster? Your motherboard and Vista may be conspiring to modulate the speeds of your fans. If one of the fans is literally wearing out (bearings, etc), the modulations could make this noise come and go...Check to see if the noise comes and goes under heavier loads. That could indicate a fan bearing going bad at higher RPM's. -Greg

Hi Dan (Greg, I saw your post too),As far as the graphics driver, I'm using the Vista driver available from the ATI Web site (current). I saw that ATI still has their old drivers and I found one specifically for Vista RC1. I was going to try the older one to see if that helped with the buzzing noise but didn't (see below).I've done a ton of web research and it sounds like the buzzing noise is caused by the CPU switching between power states. As I understand it, the power management system within Vista controls this (and perhaps this will be solved when I get the retail version of Vista). Some people have turned off the power management features, other people have plugged in USB devices to keep the load up on the CPU so it doesn't drop into a lower power state. Here are some links to discussions I've found on the topic:http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.p...87&postcount=12http://forum.rightmark.org/topic.cgi?id=6:852I'm not seeing the same issues with the graphics as you are, so I don't know what to say. I have a very clean system right now - just Vista RC1 and FSX.I'm going to try some of the suggested fixes as a temporary solution, but in the long run, I need to identify the exact issue and then find the correct solution (don't know if it's an Intel, ATI, or Microsoft issue at this time...or ASUS as I have an ASUS P5B Deluxe motherboard).~ Jim
