February 11, 200719 yr I made a post today regarding a problem configuring my ATI card with FS but have since discovered something new. Recently, I noticed a lot of glistening, shimmering, sparkling, in my display that probably started after updating my ATI 9800 driver. I made some changes in the Catalyst control window (temporal anti aliasing, AF filtering slider, etc.) and returned to FS after saving and exiting the ATI control center and all was well. Nice smooth textures and display. I returned to FS a day later and the shimmering poor display was back. I reduced FS to the taskbar and reopened the ATI window and all settings were as they should be so I returned to FS but still had the poor display. Today, same problem but after checking in ATI again and returning to FS, the display was fine again. After my session, I simply paused FS to return later this evening, and upon reopening FS, the display is bad again. I thought it had to do with having the ATI icon on my taskbar rather than being closed, but that isn't it. Any idea how to get the new settings to be permanently recognized by FS??? U tried restarting FS, and restarting the computer itself with no help. Getting frustrated. Thanks. Tom

February 11, 200719 yr "Any idea how to get the new settings to be permanently recognized by FS??? U tried restarting FS, and restarting the computer itself with no help. Getting frustrated."Tom,There are no FS9/FSX configuration files that would permanently recognize your ATI display settings. Once your ATI display settings are set by clicking on OK or Apply, FS9/FSX will use those settings just like any other game, a photo program, or just general use of your computer (like browsing on the Internet). Yes, FS9/FSX has Display.cfg files but those are used for certain video cards that need extra attention in order to work with FS. Your ATI 9800 is not one of them. Your FS9/FSX.cfg should properly identify your ATI card in the Display section and that's all you need to check (or check what video card is shown when you open FS9/FSX display settings within the game). You should be able to adjust ATI display settings with FS9/FSX operating. In FS9 I had serious shimmering problems at several airports and simply Alt/Tabbed back to the desktop, opened the ATI Catalyst Center, and reduced the AF from 16 to 8, Alt/Tabbed back to FS9 and the shimmering was gone. It's not so easy with FSX. For some reason (and the problem is known by Microsoft), you cannot always Alt/Tab in and out of FSX. I have been able to do so on many occasions but sometimes it's impossible and I have to shut down FSX and restart the game. The folks over at Radar Contact came up with a solution to fix this problem because when you click on the Start Radar Contact for FSX, it automatically goes into FSX without any stuttering or delays. It's very smooth and the only program I've seen that does it properly. I believe this will be fixed when SP1 for FSX is released in the near future by Microsoft. I think when you paused the game and returned later, your screen saver probably clicked on and the screen saver creates havoc with many program as many use a lot of system resources (I use the fish aquarium screen saver and I know that uses a lot of system resources to operate!). This might have been the cause of the poor display when you returned. Jumping inside, outside, and then back inside any game is never a good idea. As I mentioned several times on these forums, you should check out the excellent ATI Catalyst Tweak Guide located at http://www.tweakguides.com/ATICAT_1.html AND The Gamer's Graphics & Display Settings Guide located at http://www.tweakguides.com/Graphics_1.html for more information concerning your video card settings.Good luck in getting your problem fixed.Best regards,Jim
