October 13, 200718 yr Hi guys,I normally use the windows task manager to keep an eye on things.FSX runs pretty well for me.Under the processes tab and right clicking on fsx.exe you can select either "set priority" or "affinity"Q. What do these do [in simple terms please] and are there any benefits in changing these settings and if so to what?I have an Athlon 64 x 2 dual core running at 10% overclocked at 2420In my CFG file I have included [jobscheduler] Affinitymask =11Any help/comment appreciated.RegardsRichard
October 14, 200718 yr Hi RichardHaving read a lot of the posts I think that the correct entry in your cfg file should be:SQUARE BRACKETS JOBSCHEDULER SQUARE BRACKETS AffinityMask=3in FS9 I used to use the "affinity" tab to set fs9.exe to use one of the cores in a dual core computer. We don't have to use the above entry in the cfg unless you have serious performance issues with SP1. Phil Taylor (on his blog) and other forums have discussed this setting and others which can supposedly turn FSX into a turbocharged, smooth as silk version. I try them all using the fabulous "save" setting in FSX to recall the ones that give me the best performance for the terrain and weather.Peter Hayes
October 14, 200718 yr Hello Peter, many thanks for your reply.Well I do not have any SERIOUS issues with FSX at all. I have to say that unlike many FSX [sP1] has always worked well for me. Don't ask me why. I have a very medium sort of machine which I built myself. However the one issue I do have is with aircraft appearing momentarily in "grey" before full colour "pops" in. This also happens when using the hat switch to view when in 2D mode and going to spot view. But only for a second or two. I keep looking for that last magical tweak that will eliminate this but as yet am unsuccesful. It is annoying more than anything else.I will try the AffinityMask=3 and see what happens.I wil also try without the above as well just to see what happens.I am rather inclined to think though that the problem is a graphics card one, but like so many others I am [at the moment] reluctant to spend any more money on FSX untill I know for sure which way the wind is blowing.RegardsRichard
October 15, 200718 yr The grey texture problem of your plane will be a data throughputproblem for your computer - ie can't get the textures fast enoughoff disk ->RAM -> GPU memory. I would doubt whether the affinitywould have any effect - my feeling is if it works don't mess withit - but it is easy to undo affinity :)Tom
