November 9, 200718 yr I guess this its for those who are wondering about how much ram to bye. I read an interesting article yesterday in a pc magazine about memory mapping. It seems that windows maps the PCI address space to the 4 gig limit and down from there , under that comes your video card adress space, ie if you have 4 gig of ram and have a 512 meg video card you loose 512 meg of you memory as that section is mapped to the video card, and this applies to 32 or 64 bit os and i assume from what it says that vista is no different, makes a good case for staying at the 3 gig limit. mind you if you get more then 4 gig anything above that is free. There are articles on the web abt this.
November 9, 200718 yr mind you if you get more then 4 gig anything above that is free. Not in a 32-bit operating system..it has a maximum address space of 2^32 = 4,294,967,296 (4GB) so it will never use more than 3GBA 64-bit OS has an address space of2^64 = 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 (16 Exabytes) so if you had a motherboard big enough you could put in 16 billion 1GB sticks of RAM!!!RegardsJim
