eDimensional 3D LCD Shutter Glasses, FSX and Vista

Featured Replies

I want to relate a new experience I've had with the eDimensional 3D glasses that I got a couple of days ago...I just did a search and the last threads I saw about these glasses were all back in 2004 and 2005...Most E3D users probably think that under Vista and FSX their glasses are useless due to NIVIDA dropping E3D support, but I came across a solution that is definitely on the right path to full E3D support again in Vista and FSX...The quest for a solution started when I discovered:A) Nvidia no longer supported E3D LCD Shuttered glasses with their new 8xxx series of 3d Stereo Drivers:( No Vista native eDimensional 3D drivers (users require XP to use the default CD install software including the original Nvidia stereo drivers that did support E3D) C) FSX SP2/Acceleration require an Nvidia 8xxx series video card at a minimum to run, this conflicts with the ability to run the original nvidia stereo drivers which only supported up to the 7900 series of nvidia cardsIt seemed all was lost but then I looked over at www.ddd.com after reading a thread at avsim about some 3D driver software that most were raving about anaglyph under that driver... I decided to do some research and find out if they would support 3D shuttered glasses and sure enough there is support for interlaced 3D as well... I knew that the E3D glasses could work like that so I decided to spend $5 on an experiment...In short the experiment worked and frame rates were decent... About half of what they were before but still smooth enough to be acceptable and the wow factor is definitely a distraction from the halved frame rate...It's not a perfect solution right now but it is a very good solution while waiting for either the IZ3D drivers or the updated edimensional drivers that should be able to support page flipping LCD shuttered 3D which looks even better...Anyway below is my outline (pasted from my blog) for how to get the edimensional glasses working with FSX and Vista... I wish I could post screenshots and I'm more than willing to share the 3D LCD screenies with anyone if they have the DDD drivers and LCD shuttered glasses...I took the plunge with the $5 DDD drivers based on info on their website and lo and behold when selected in interlaced mode the 3D effect works if I manually kick in the e3d glasses into interlaced mode as well!!!Full color FSX in 3D, no red/blue or red/cyan (which only give a partial 3D effect and most often a lot of ghosting, not to mention the ugly color shifts!!!)...I'm waiting for future drivers to come out from both edimensional and iz3d but if anyone has the e3d glasses here's how to get it to work under vista in interlaced mode for a very good 3D effect!First of all install the latest non beta NVidia drivers (for nvidia cards), I have an 8500GT temporarily...Download the updated installer from the edimensional website or alternatively the 3D test software... Run the updated installer from the website and choose the non-nvidia install... This will allow you to manually kick in the 3D driver... You'll have to make sure to turn off "Enable Game 3D" as it will crash FSX and other DX9 software if it's on...Next get the FSX DDD driver and registration ($5 fee) and choose:Manufacturer: (standard display types)Model: Interlaced (mode 6)3D Display Location: (Your Videocard)Make sure the eDimensional controller has 'enable game 3d' switched off... Otherwise it tends to crash the 3d software programs like FSX and COD4...Start FSX, and load up a flight in windowed mode (full screen mode did not work for me)... If you start up and get a black screen because you're in full screen mode, just hit alt+enter to enter windowed mode...Right click on the eDimensional controller in your system tray and click "3D Display On" (you may have needed to also set your system up for interlaced mode through the other edimensional controller)...Voila, interlaced 3D FSX on Vista... I have a weird thing happening now that I've stopped flying FSX, my eyes keep wigging out and trying to make the screen 3D while I'm typing this...Anyway, that's how to get a work around for the e3d glasses for FSX under Vista 32bit for now until edimensional comes out with new drivers *hope hope*Oh be sure to launch FSX via the TriDef LaunchpadIf anyone wants to try this and needs help I can help provide more detailed install instructions... The interlaced 3D is not ideal, but for now while we wait for upcoming new software drivers that can handle page flipping, it's an incredible experience to fly in FSX...
