Hard Drive Question.

Featured Replies

I have a question about hard drive upgrades, I am fairly happy with my q6600 OC'd and 8800gts but have been unhappy with drive speed. My FSX folder is about 40GB in size and I was thinking about upgrading to a fster drive. what would be the best in you all's opinion for speed. I will keep the OS on a seperate drive and have FSX on its own drive.I plan on one of these two drives. Patriot Warp 64GB Solid State Hard Drive - SATAorWD VelociRaptor 150GB SATA HD 10K/16MB/SATA

I wouldnt go for a solid state disk just at the moment, it's still a relitively new tech for large size drives, and I remember seeing something negative about the Patriot drive on the AVSIM forums somewhere - you may want to do a search. The WD Raptors are a good purchase, but only really come into their own in RAID setups (2 or more drives). For a single drive, and assuming you have SATA2 on your motherboard, go for something like a Samsung Spinpoint F1 drive (they do a 160Gb version - Model HD162GJ), which are quoted very often in a Computer magazine I read as "Faster than a WD RaptorX". Theyre also very quiet drives.Hope that helps a bit. :)
