Dual video cards??

Featured Replies

I've noticed that it seems like a lot of you are running just one video card. I see where a lot of the gaming computers are being built with two cards and I was wondering if there is much advantage in FSX to running a 2nd video card. Thanks,Jeff

Except if you want to have 4 displays, absolutely no.My thoughts were maybe only for picture quality, as it is my understanding that dual cards allow for higher AA/AF settings while maintaining the speed. Not sure about this one though.

FS simply isn't optimized for multiple GPU rendering. As the poster above me said, unless you're running more than 2 monitors there is no need for multiple graphics cards. The best solution is to buy the fastest single GPU card your budget can afford. Triangle setup rate (determined by core clockspeed) seems to be the determining factor in FS frame rate, which is why the massively overclocked G92-based cards (8800 GT/GTS512 and 9800 GT/GTX cards) perform best in FS, as they have the highest core clock speeds. Note this is not true of other 3d games. If you want to play first person shooters you'll be better off with a multiple GPU configuration, or even a single GPU with higher shader throughput (more/higher clocked Shader Processors i.e. HD4000 series, GTX200 series).

No advantage whatsoever from my experience with 2 NVidias, except in one instance, for very high AA. The issue though, is that FSX is CPU bound more than it is GPU bound, so adding additional horsepower on the GPU doesn't seem to do much at all, except for the pockets of hardware manufacturers.Save your funds :)Etienne

Thanks for the input. I just bought a GTX 260 (w/216 stream processors), still unopened, and now I'm thinking maybe I should've gotten the GTX 280 for a couple hundred bucks more ($449). Would the 280 be overkill for FSX or should I go for it. It's not like I have mucho bucks to blow, but if there is a big difference in performance over the 260 I might go for it.Thanks,Jeff
