August 12, 200421 yr Hi folks,Altough I made many repaints for FLYII , I am not familiar with all the in and outs of making repaints for MSFS 2004.Importing -converting etc. with DXTBmp is something I never did before. My problem.I have a normal (looking) BMP file ,size 4 mb.1024x1024When I load it into DXTBmp and sent it to the editor( PSP )I can repaint the file.Reloaded in DXTBmp and can see my results. So far OK.When I want to save the file I cannot keep the filsesize at 4 mb.I can get it bigger and smaller but not the same size. When I load these files in MSFS the result looks very blurred. Please give me the golden tip?RegardsLeen de JagerPS Just opening the file in PSP and saving it , reduces the size from 4 to 3 mb.
August 12, 200421 yr Not really sure what you are doing, but, this is what I do.Make the paint in PSP, save the resultant file as a BMP.Open that bitmap in DXTBMP, MAKE SURE THE MIPMAPS CHECKBOX IN UNTICK, cant stress that enough, and save as a DXT3 file. The first BMP from PSP would be about 4mb, and the file after converting to DXT3 would be about 1mb.Dan.
August 12, 200421 yr Hi Dan,It`s me again.Unchecking the mipmap option did the trick. Thanks for your helpRegardsLeenps I saved it to extended32bit , this keeps the quality high.filesize 4mb
August 12, 200421 yr If you do your bitmap in a particular way, you can get a DXT3 bitmap to look as good as a 32 bit one.Dan.
August 12, 200421 yr Hallo Dan,You are right again ( wich does not surprise me :)It`s about 500 kb now in an excellent quality.RegardsLeen
August 12, 200421 yr Dan,I have to correct myself. For the same quality I can go down to 1 Mb.The only question wich`s left. Why did`nt the maker of the original do so?ByeLeen
August 12, 200421 yr I assume you mean why is the original texture you are using a 32-bit image and not a DXT3 one?Basically, people are of the opinion that 32-bit textures give superior image quality in FS, while this is true to a degree, the technique I use in my textures, I believe, gives 32-bit quality, with DXT3 size and performance.Download my textures and see for yourself, I think there is very, very little difference in image quality.Dan.
August 13, 200421 yr Hi Dan,I visited your (brilliant) website.Had a look at your work and I am thrilled by the quality. In the DAF Fokker ,I found some big bmp files (4mb each), the same type I was talking about yesterday.I am interested in the Fokker but could not find a MSFS2004 Fokker 50.( I saw a six-bladeCan you give me a link for a download of this Dreamwings Fokker 50for MSFS2004 ?RegardsLeen de Jagerbtw; did you have a look at my repaint-site?
August 18, 200421 yr Hi DanWhat is the "particular way" in which you do your repaints to preserve the quality when saving as DXT3" The only way that I am aware of is to repaint in the 32bit format and then convert to DXT3...but I always keep my master copy in 32bit format because if I try to alter a DXT3 paint then the textures get really hashed.Gus
August 19, 200421 yr Hi Gus,Basically, I have found that by using a set of filters, I can get the DXT format to be as sharp as a 32 bit one.I found it by accident really, as I used to do all my textures in 32-bit format, as seen by some of my F50 paints, but I felt the size was too big really. So I played about with various filters, both before and after, "extending" the bitmap, and found a good combination.I believe that this combination gives the user the best of both worlds, small download size and good texture loading/fps, but with good image quality.CheersDan.
