Help with GIMP and Jagged lines

Featured Replies

Gday allHave just finished my first repaint, however I am having trouble with the jagged appearance of some lines. The top of the red stripe is particularly bad, having a pronounced staircase appearance.CHKGimp.jpgCHK2.jpgRepaints were done on the Gimp (v2.2.11)using a number of layers. All lines were constructed by stroked paths or by using select area from a path. The mode was RGB (not indexed), and the image was converted to DXT3 format.I thought it might be an antialias issue, however that box was checked when I stroked the paths. I've had a play with filters and checked the preferences, but still to no avail.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It does indeed look like an anti aliasing issue. Could you take a closer up shot of the repaint in GIMP?

No worries, here it is:CHKGimp2.jpgCHKGimp3.jpg

Now I can see its just the red section with the problem, how did you make it?By the way, if you want a good way to have the white registration showing the panel lines and rivets then I've got a method that works fairly well :)

The red section was made by defining the area by path, then selecting area from path and just bucket filling.Would love to here the trick with the rego letters; they were a bit of an afterthought as this repaint was just a bit of mucking around to learn the ropes, but I got carried away and became a finished product, albeit not highly polished. Not being too familiar with GIMP its difficult to suggest a solution. Does the program have a blur function, for example gaussian blur? If it does then apply a very small amount of blur just to soften the edges. You maybe could use the method you did to make the lines (line tool?)then merge the line layers together and fill the inside of it.. just some ideas. As GIMP sounds like it handles layers pretty well the white reg text should be fairly easy.Assuming the text is a layer on its own, duplicate it. Deactivate the duplicate for the time being and merge the original with the red. You may want to duplicate and hide the red section as a back up.When set to multiply (assuming thats what the red layer is set to) white goes see through. Reactivate the duplicate text layer and lower its opacity to a relatively small number.. say 10 or something. If there are any panel lines running under the reg then using a line tool, just make black lines going over the top and reduce the opacity to something small. You want the black lines just to bring out the panel lines under the reg a bit.

Thanks for the help Morgan, either one of those suggestions produces a better result than what I had. Thanks also for the rego help; I look forward to getting to work and putting some repaints out there.Cheers
