How do you turn the battery on?

Hello,I can't seem to get the battery to turn on in the 757. I select the STBY Bat to 'Bat" and nothing happens. What is the correct procedure? I can get the APU started no problem, but when the APU does start it indicates that my battery is off.Thanks for anyone who can help. It is appreciated.Brian
