More autoland follies in the L-1011-500.

Recommended Posts

I tried doing a full autoland landing at Atlanta today, on rwy 26R. My auxiliary fuel tanks were empty. My landing weight was 340,000lbs. I had both autopilots engaged. I had the autothrottle set to 170kts, and flaps at 18 prior to engaging A/L. I intercepted the localizer at 30 degrees, then I turned on the A/L button. It tracked the localizer right away and settled right on center line. When I started seeing the glide slope drop, I decreased speed to 160kts and lowered flaps and gear all the way. Everything was seeming to be alright with the exception that the plane was one light above the glideslope for the entire time. Also, the ALPHA autothrottle had the Vref speed set to 150kts which is very very fast considering how light my plane was. When it came time to flair over the threshhold., it flaired too early, and went very nose high and held it there. I was still probably 30 or 40 feet above the runway at this point. The plane then stalled over the runway and crashed. I tried this three times, same thing every time. What am I doing wrong?-Fritz
