CTD when ending a flight

I cannot end a flight in FSX using ESC without the sim minimizing to the taskbar at the bottom, and losing control of my mouse. The music starts to play in short bursts every second or so, and the mouse will move to a new position only during short bursts of time. I have to estimate where the mouse pointer will go to get over a clickpoint. The sim is virtually useless to me at this point. I cannot uninstall it either.

I should add that using File / Load and File / Reset work properly, so I will continue with those.
