Linking To Airliners.net?

Recommended Posts

In the "Real Aviation Photos" forum I wanted to post a topic with a link to my first and only photo on Airliners.Net. However when I clicked to preview the post I got this message:

THE FOLLOWING ERROR(S) WERE FOUNDYou have entered a link to a website that the administrator does not allow links to
Would you please share the reason as to why links to Airliners.Net are prohibited? Thanks in advance.

Sure Andre. It is quite straight forward really. Airliners.net does not allow linking to their files; that is, to embed in some other site, so that it appears as that site's content. We support Airliners.net's position and have the same policy ourselves. Too often in the past, we have seen folks here totally ignore that, and we now have the ability to block links to sites like Airliners.net to protect their bandwidth and content.EDIT: Why not just upload your image to the real aviation photo forum here as well?

Genuine question - is it necessary to block links to the site altogether? The issue at hand surely is hotlinking, which can be dealt with separately unless I'm mistaken. Airliners.net is (arguably) such a useful resource; not just photos but forum posts too. Any way around this, gents?

Tom, I am not quite sure what you mean. The issue is embedding their content with AVSIM. If we allow a airliners DOT net link, then as sure as I am sitting here, images from the site will appear in our forums. There is no way for us to selectively allow one and not the other. If you are aware of a switch within this forum software that does that, then please let me know.

I must admit I don't know how to get around the problem; that said, airliners.net themselves will usually take measures to prevent hotlinking, at least in my experience.

Well, we are not going to be put in the position of being in the Airliners.net "leach filter". We can do that here too, and any site that makes our leach list is NOT a good thing.
