Lat/Long Programming in GPS...

Is it possible to program destinations into the default gps by entering lat/lon coordinates? All I see is airports navaids and intersections. I ask this because next door is DNR and I've been talking to the chopper pilots and they have been giving me coordinates for the fires they are fighting. It takes quite a while to get there without being able to just program in the coordinates.Any ideas? Thanks, Adam

Not directly into the default GPS. But you can put any coordinates you like into a GPS flight plan, and they will then display correctly on the GPS after you load up that flight plan. This is how I transfer my flight plans from my real world VFR flight planner into the FS2002 GPS. My waypoints tend to be landmarks rather than navaids. I simply wrote a VBA routine to convert the real world OziExplorer file into the text format used by FS. If you can't write your own routine to convert the coordinates you can either type them in manually into a .pln file, or there might be other utilities around that do a similar thing.

Thanks Jon. Sounds rather complicated. I wonder if any of the addon GPS systems allow for directly plugging in lat/lon data. I certainly would not be competent to write my own 'routines' and don't even know what a VBA routine is.Maybe COF will offer this possibility with the GPS.Adam

I haven't yet upgraded to the current version of FSBuild, but version 1.4 allows direct programming of coordinates into a MS-GPS flightplan without much hassle. I'm sure version 2.0 has retained this functionality, as well. You can find information on both versions at http://www.fsbuild.com/.
