Help with mixture control

Featured Replies

Hello,I just start to fly old aircrafts but I have a question:How do I adjsut the mixture during climb without a EGT-instrument?Please help meChris

The mixture controls for old time aircraft usually were usually set "by ear". Lean the mixture slowly until you hear the engine(s) peak (sound) and then begin to drop off slightly (lean of peak). Move the mixture back towards peak until the engines peak and then begin to drop off slightly, but this time on the rich side. That's as good as you can get. This was the scientifically approved method in use for years. You don't got no stinkin' EGT? You don't need no stinkin' EGT.In the real world, you would be able to see the effects of the mixture changes by monitoring the CHT and oil temps.
