Haze and fog layers ASA-FSX

Featured Replies

Hi Jim and everyone,ASA is doing a great job now that I have found all the correct settings :) It's now autumn, and fog/mist have started to appear, but I can't understand if what I see it's what should be. First: fog layer option checked and disable haze layer checked. Last night I was at about 5000 feet, VMC, below me nothing but the ground and sea. It seemed a perfect day for VFR. Then I descended to land, and all of a sudden it was 1/4 mile visibility, so I climbed again, VMC, totally. Descended...no, pure IMC. So, it seems that the haze layer was really disabled, as I couldn't see that "milky" layer below me, but I didn't see the fog layer. I assume it should be kind of "stratus overcast" as it's in reality, am I wrong? I remember I read a post about a special texture you made for a user who had trouble with this haze layer, do I need the same?I now re-enabled the haze layer, at least I know I should expect some low visibility, but it's really not eye-candy.Thanks in advancecheersFedeP.S. ASA is SP1, FSX SP2, DWC disabled, ASA on FSX machine

Hi,The haze texture is working. Do you recall what the data that ASA was using? Thanks,

Sure it is, it's the fog layer which is not :)The exact data no, I can't remember, but I did use the com2 to listen to the ASA ATIS and it was saying 1/4 visibility, and some higher clouds were reported (about 8000 feet the lowest base). I was landing in Z41 in Anchorage, and it was 17th October 2009 at 21/22Z, according the FSE client log (flight ended at 2209Z). Real time setting. As the Haze texture was working I could see clear below me, which it was wrong, as I should have had a thick layer of fog, no?ThanksFede

Hi,Was the FG code for fog actually a part of the METAR? I know you might not remember, but in the future, that code must be present. A low visibility does not mean that fog will be shown. Thanks,

The FG code was present this is the wx for that date and time:PANC 171953Z 01003KT 1/4SM R07R/2600VP6000FT FG VV001 02/01 A2964 RMK A02 SFCOther Metars from the nearby airports report BR, as visibility was 1 1/4 SM. Besides the FG code was present, also the 100 feet vertical visibility was reported. I think all the elements needed to depict the fog layer were present in the METAR, so what should I have seen? Is it ok what I am assuming, the ground-contact-stratus, as fog layer depiction? Is there a special texture for this too, or is it just a stratus cloud?Anyway, a possible bug is ahead here. What if the METAR says BR? Shall I see nothing until I fall in IMC? Fog is from 0m to 1000m, from 1000 m to 5000 m it's mist. While fog is a thick layer, it's literally a cloud down to the ground, usually 500/1000 feet thick (as an average), and seen from above looks no different from an overcast stratiform cloud with light turbulence (maybe stronger if fog is caused by a strong inversion), mist looks more or less as haze is depicted by FS. Just a thought.Cheers

Hi,I set up a METAR with only FG and 1SM visibility, no cloud layer. The visibility/fog was correct and once I moved above 10K I did have a cloud layer marking the boundary. Now my layer was cumulus because I have my stratus cloud slider set to zero.Remember that all of this is defined by the limitations of the FS engine so we can't get past that. Codes that reduce surface visibility are all going to be handled by the visibility engine in FS and this layer is going to go from the surface to 10K.Thanks,
