MD11 Autopilot performance.

Featured Replies

Does anybody else feel that the MD11's autopilot performance is below par compared with past PMDG products?-For a heavy, the roll rate seems rather harsh, particularly the commencement of the roll. -Slowing from 290kts to 250kts in idle CLAMP, causes the autopilot to pitch up so hard that if it were a real aircraft there would almost certainly be structual damage!-With V/S selected, the A/P struggles to maintain the correct ROD at slower speeds when it initiates a turn.-LOC capture is really sloppy and often turns in too early.-At 180kts and flap 15, with HDG SEL, the A/P oscilates in roll at about 15 deg either side as it "hunts" for the heading. These are all observed with the default clear-skies weather.Regards,Martin Neep

I don't know if I agree with the roll rate being "harsh". I think it seems just fine, but it's all perspective I guess. I'm sure if we had video of an MD-11 banking we'd see a roll rate that looked the same. Pax never really know what it looks like, as they sit in the back.I'm not sure about the slowing from 290 to 250 or 240 either. I guess at times it seems a little abrupt, but nothing to cause damage.Yes, the V/S does move around a lot in turns and I have found myself playing around with it to try and keep it where it should be.I don't use APP/LAND mode, so I can't speak to the LOC or G/S capture. I only fly app/finals manually.Don't recall ever using HDG mode on approach or final, so I can't say.My issue is more with speed than anything. The oddities observed approaching mach changeover, whereby the MMO will drop into the current speed causing an overspeed. Nothing like this occurs with any other PMDG plane I have. I've also lost airspeed on final as if ATS fell asleep, but I've had trouble reproducing this one and I'm busy now, so it's hard to test. I hope any issues will be addressed in the future, as will the EVM typo and thrust washout on take off.

No complaints with the ATS, I find it very accurate!Regards,Martin Neep
