December 23, 200916 yr Having read around here and on nvidias website i have come to the conclusion that something isnt right with my w7 64 bit /nvidia/fsx combo. The sim is very very playable on DX10 , it will be interesting to see if more people get a boost in dx10 now under the W7 OS. I am going to create a windows XP secondary boot disk and install fsx under that OS also in order to see the differerence. I am assuming there will be benefits such as being able to experience fsx under DX9 with the graphics card and pc working as intended but mostly as i want to compare one to the other. Exporting AA to the graphics card and not in game i think on this rig is worth about 15 more fps because AA places additional cycles on the CPU. The other option of course is to get a cheapo 1gb ATI card and see how that works under W7.On DX10 i have not got through all my addons yet but installed UTX, GEX and PMDG MD11 and all smooth locked at 30 although I can get the odd jump when in Fly Tampa Boston

Besides, 'external' FSAA might give some extra fps, but moving from DX10 to DX9 will lose a lot fps, so I doubt if you will gain anything in the end. It's also a simple matter of taste. Some people just can't stand vsync off, others just can't stand 'simple FSAA': I gladly traded both in for super fps and a still might good looking sim.

It could be for example that my system is being held back by whatever is wrong under windows 7 64 / nvidia and that under windows XP i get higher FPS under both dx9 and dx10. I also believe ( rightly or wrongly ) that getting more of the work onto the graphics card i will get a higher fps given AA on card under DX10 reduces the FPS by some 20%. It is a case at this point to experiment and see what XP has to offer. It is concievable that with the system i buit just for FSX i get an even better looking sim under XP, I will report back.

DX10 clearly isn't! But I've been tweaking and testing too much already in my life and I like it how DX10 delivers the goods out of the box. :( I haven't noticed a 20% loss of fps with FSX FSAA btw. And XP doesn't support DX10 so I wonder how you could get higher fps on XP with both DX9 and DX10!

Swings and roundabouts. Im also avoiding several other issues that were present in W7 with add on aircraft. Anti aliasing exported to the video card which is allowed to work properly i suspect is a large component in this performance boost.
