April 20, 201016 yr Does anyone know the purpose for the "Land Detail Textures" Checkbox in the FSX Settings Display menu? I keep it unchecked because whenever I've tried using it in the past, I've gotten very strange water texture effects (weird colors) and recently, after I installed the Ultimate Alaska add-on, I was getting solid black ground textures instead of the proper scenery (with this option checked).I'm just curious as to what this option is supposed to do. I have an Nvidia display card so perhaps the problems I have experienced only happen with these cards.

Try sitting on the ground in a parked plane (the ground, not the tarmac) and look closely at the ground. Then turn on the detail textures and look again. You'll see the effect more clearly than if I try to go into detail (heh) explaining it.I've never heard of detail textures affecting water, but stranger things have happened. If you're an Orbx customer, their FTX Aero tool allows you to experiment with different detail textures to find one you like the most. There are also replacements available in the Avsim library.
