Overclocking Core i7 930 To 4Ghz

Featured Replies

Currently my CPU is overclocked to 3.7Ghz - it came that way from my PC supplier. Stock is 2.8Ghz. From the start it performed reasonably well in FSX with high settings but the framerates took a tumble at complex add-on airports, typically diving to around 13 fps. Even some default airports in high detail areas like KJFK scored in the high teens, but I could get 30-50 fps out in the countryside. This is all with complex payware heavies like the PMDG 747, ConcordeX, LDS 767 etc. After applying *******/Bojote's recommended settings, pinned elsewhere in this forum, my countryside fps started spending a lot more time at the upper end of the scale and beyond, but the figures at high detail airports only significantly changed when I copied *******' FSX.cfg file, and applied an external framerate limiter set to 30 fps. Typically I now achieve that figure, or there about, with Ultimate Traffic 2 set to spawn 300 AI aircraft maximum, with the traffic desity sliders in UT2 set at 25%. Road and water traffic are set at 30% and 40% respectively, with which I am happy. I use ASE for weather, and it does not seem to have a significant performance hit for me.So here is my question. I want to run higher levels of AI air traffic, but I can find the framerates dropping to the high teens or low twenties in high detail areas, particularly at complex add-on airports. If I tweak my rig ang push the i7 930 to around 4Ghz am I likely to see a worthwile gain in framerates with higher traffic settings in those areas? Or will I end up shortening the life of my rig for no real reason?I am a complete novice at overclocking, but I have done some reading and I have a reasonable idea about what to do, but any advice, especially any specific to my components, would be appreciated. See my signature for system specs.Thanks.

Regards,

PD

I'm not an expert on overclocking but I'm guessing the 0.3GHz is not going to cause much of a difference. Even a top of the line i7 980x with Nvidia GTX480 probably can't run at higher than low 20's with all settings (including traffic) set to max in the usual worse-case scenario (complex airport, plane, etc.). On the other hand if you just want to increase the traffic slider another five percent or so the overclock might be worth it.Thanks,Al
