Is GPU my bottleneck?

Featured Replies

Hello I play a lot of Flight Sim X. Have recently built a rig around it to play it in all its awesomeness. Details are CPU: AMD 1090t x6@ 4ghzMEM: 4GB 1600mhzMOBO: ASUS M4A89GTD-PROGPU: Radeon 4870 512mb.HDD: 2x1TB WD Black Sata3 in Raid 0 (FSX Only drive)HDD1 OS 1tb WD Black.Addons are:ORBX (ALL Australia)ORB X (PNW)REX2ULTIMATE TRAFFIC 2 (100% aircraft)Monitor is a Samsung 24 inch running at 1920x1200. I am running FSX Acceleration with all the correct patches. I have heard that fsx is a cpu hog thus the good CPU, and the problem is not over 'stock scenery' where I get pretty good frame rates, but over my addon scenery I really feel the screen 'stutters' Frame rates seem to be from 12-25 Whereas the non addon scenery I get about 56-80 frames a second. (less if built up area) Could anyone with some FSX experience let me know if this is the reason for my frames? I am looking at going for a GTX 470 or 480 as I have heard from other simmers that nvidia is better for FSX.I have not yet done the fsx tweak guide. All of my detail sliders are moved to the right, but most of the time it seems to struggle, especially over addon scenery. Even when I reduce the slider settings to ORBX reccomended I push perhaps 10-25 frames a second below 10000ft.Any Ideas? I understood that my new system should be able to kill everything FSX can throw at it.

well i dont think that a new gpu would help you in this game that much but in other games it would ( i suggest 1gb gtx 460 and oc'ing it). AS for your fsx settings you are running intense scenery, full ai traffic, and high end environment settings at 1920x1200. Even though that is an amazing rig fsx wasnt really designed for the future so i doubt having 6 cores over 4 cores would make a noticeable difference. But that is just what i am assuming, fsx isnt a huge benchmarking game due to it being dx9 and made a few years back. Maybe someone with more knowledge on fsx with new hardware could be more of assistance :P

with 100% traffic and complex scenery like ORBX, yes, it's normalthere's some configurations in UT2 that you could play with: minimum height to see AI traffic, target frame rate... a new GPU won't help much as stated above, but you can use bojote's shader mod 3.0 if your frames drop in thick clouds. that's about all you can do as far as I know (or sell your 1090T and get an I5 750, that's what I'm going to do)
