ASA and PMDG 744X - still getting sudden climbs

Featured Replies

I got another case of the sudden and very steep climb during a descent to Amsterdam Schipol (EHAM) airport today. I use the PMDG 744X and ASA (build 433), and FSX with Windows XP Pro 32-bit. I have no idea what caused it except that I was playing around with the auto-pilot descent (V/S) settings. I also have FS2004 and ASV 6.5 and the PMDG 744 there but this NEVER happened.I have read the Hi-Fi Simulation forum and apparently this is a known issue with ASA, ASE and PMDG aircraft but is there anything else you need as information from me to see if there is something I may have missed in doing to fix this issue? By the way, I already downloaded ASE but can't install it since my ASA is not in its own folder in my C: drive but in the Program Files folder and I really don't want to uninstall ASA just yet and re-install it just get ASE which apparently has the same issues with PMDG aircraft anyways based on what I saw here.Jim, any suggestions? :( John

Hi,What is a "sudden and very steep climb"? Is that the same as a wind shift?

Hi,What is a "sudden and very steep climb"? Is that the same as a wind shift?
What everyone is posting about: a climb rate which goes insane, at OVER 4000 to as much as 6000 or even more feet per minute. To be honest, I did not check if there was a wind shift at the very moment the climb occurs because I'm too stressed out trying to recover the plane. But I will try to keep an eye on the winds and check right away if this happens again. But this happened to me again yesterday after I posted this and I have another theory as to why it may have happened. I am using Radar Contact which asks me to start my descent well before the PMDG FMS-calculated TOD. When I was close (maybe 10 miles or so) or reaching the point of the PMDG-calculated TOD (as I was already well below this point-a good 15,000 feet below it in fact, on my descent path as instructed by RC ATC, the sudden climb began. I had trouble disconnecting the auto-pilot and finally took manual control and managed to descent again, but not until I had climbed a good 10,000 feet!BUT, I only started using RC two days ago and this sudden climb was also happening before RC, where I was respecting the TOD in the PMDG FMS...I have unchecked the "disable turbulence and thermal effects on aircraft" checkbox in FSX by the way and even reduced my wind shift maximumums in ASA.If you have any ideas whether this is caused indeed by winds or by another thing (like FMS), let me know.Thanks.John

Hi,Suggest it is the FMS.Can you point me to other threads that speaks on this? I read every single thread and I don't recall ever reading or responding to a thread about this.

Hi Jim,I can't find the threads either now, but it may have been the threads talking about LATERAL navigation issues with wind shifts and I may have gotten these mixed up with VNAV issues. I found some postings in the PMDG forum about just this issue - incredible loss of control, and steep climbs with A/P not responding to anything except being completely disengaged. This is happening to me now with EVERY flight, and always when I take manual control of descent with V/S with LNAV still engaged but VNAV disengaged. I can descend to a certain point, nearing the T/D and then the un-commanded climb occurs. Of course, by the time I cross the T/D, since ATC has already asked me to descend, I am well below it, by a good 10,000 feet or so...I'll try some of the suggestions in the PMDG forum and see what happens.John
