Weather Comparisons...Which one Best?

Featured Replies

I have ActiveSky and the new version posted today, and I've used the Novice Version of WeatherCenter, and of course, we all have RealWeather that comes with FS9. Which one would you say is the best representation of reality? I tried an experiment today in Newark (KEWR) and Seattle, and Chicago Midway. Tried ActiveSky, shut down, and tried RealWeather, and although both were relatively accurate, there was a huge difference in CLOUDS and Framerates. I have yet to try WeatherCenter for FS2004, but I remember loving it, and getting ready to buy it in FS2002, but decided to wait for the FS9 application.I will tell you what I found: ActiveSky seemed a little better on Frames, but the Clouds did not look puffy and real. I kept shutting down and restarting at different airports, and generally found the same thing. Please tell me how you compare and contrast these Weather programs. Stan

Well, I can only tell you what I have tried. I always like WeatherCenter in FS2002. Then in FS2004 it had constant stutter problem in v2.3.0. Then I tried the 2.3.1.1 Release candidate version. Which as people who tried it(including myself) said, the Weather LOOKS real GOOD! And it does. The clouds are real and puffy looking, weather transistions are pretty smooth. No pause or stuttering when it updates the weather. But there was still a slight pause/stutter every 5 seconds or so the entire time it was running. Now, they JUST released the finalized version for FS2004 last night, v2.3.1.2, which claims to have fixed this. I have installed it but have not tried it out yet. I really like the radar in WeatherCenter too which is one of the best reasons to own it, besides the beautiful weather it makes. x:)~Cheerio,Jim

Jim, Let us know how you like the latest revision of WeatherCenter. That may be the winner. If the stutters and pauses are fixed, I'd prefer it over ActiveSky and the FS9 default program. Stan

Hi Stan,I'm happy to let you know we have a winner! Stutters are gone now, works great. :)Jim Richards

Hi Jim,I just spent a couple hours flying with Weather Center Novice. Seems pretty nice. I like that it works as a module within the sim... been using Fs Meteo the last couple of years, and just don't like that I have to go outside the sim to enable it. The transitions FS Meteo are rather rough in FS9, too (though I think this is more an issue with FSUIPC).I like the visibilty transitions within WC... very nice. Are the stutters COMPLETELY gone with the latest version? Also, how is the product support? I see that WC is now a HiFi title... I'm a bit concerned about the future of WC. Your thoughts on this? Thanks for your insights,

Thanks, Jim. I was hoping you'd say that. I always believed that WeatherCenter would be more appropriate for simmers. It starts within the sim, and provides very valuable info as you fly. Thanks again. Stan

Greg,To let you know, the original author released a post that was working the said patch. Then we waited, then waited a little longer. Then over the course of a few days... we started posting about how we were being rudely ignored about request as to how progress on the patch was coming, then said that's it, not going to get any of our business and we are outta here! Then promptly after that Jim and Damian from HiFi made posts about what was happening, and that the patch for the stutters in WC was still being worked on. I was happy to finally get some response and jumped back in. In the next day or two a Release Candidate patch was posted for beta testing. A stutter every 5 seconds or so was noticed. The next day Jim posted that it was being looked into. Then a day or two following that the final was released and it works beatifully. NO stutters, while it is running, nor when the weather updates(just some wind gusts occur when the weather is updated). Weather transistions are very good and Damain has posted that the support forum is not being moved at this time but it may be consolidated with ActiveSky's forum sometime doen the road. Damian said he said he will be regularly monitoring and participating in the forum now. What happened with Keith(the original author) and why he abandonded us like he did while still working on the patch, I don't know. It wouldn't have been hard to give us an update as to how it was coming which is all we were asking for. Now, everyone is commenting on how great of weather WeatherCenter is producing and how it is now running very well(no stutters). The concern left is some severe wind gusting when Metar updates occur. As to your question about the future of WC, I can't say except for what I told you here in this post and that I'm pretty sure that HiFi Simulations(Damian) didn't buy out WeatherCenter(Simulationwidgets) with the thought of just dumping it in mind. Damian said he now has the code and it is brand new to him. I'm tend to think he will work on it in the future. He is the one who made an edit to it from the Release Candidate to the Final version to get rid of the stutter every 5 seconds. I'm sure he has would like to see WC be desirable in the marketplace and sell fairly well, so I hope he does familiarize himself with it and continue to support it in the future. Right now, it rocks(there is some gusting though) and I highly recommend it!Sincerely,Jimmy RichardsBtw, I also own FSMeteo 6.3
