Win-Xp and AGP 8X BUS settings

Featured Replies

I have NVidia FX5200 under Win XPWhen I open the NVIdia view boxes, I notivce that the AGP is noted as being , I quote; BUS "AGP (PCI 8X) ". 128 Megs memory My board does support 8X AGP and when in Win98se (dual boot) I get straight 8X AGP described in the NVidia settings box.Any reason for thisI dont notice any difference in performance.ALlen

Word on the street is people who have 8x agp don't see any difference in performance. It was an obvious step up, but an unnecessary overkill so far. Lots of debate on this. I'm still at 4x with an fx5900 an no worries.

Hi,Have to agree, went from 4x to 8x AGP, with a new board, same ram /OSand see no difference in performence in FS2002, also I have to turn off AGP Fast Writes because it is unstable, never had too with my 4xboard.Steve

Are you suggesting that I can set my BIOS to 4X and it should run as well?My actual concern here is the inclusion of the term PCI in the NVidia description of my BUS when I open the display settings pages.Allen

Agp slot is PCI bus 1, PCI slot 7 on my mother board. Doesn't mean it's a classic PCI slot, just the label for it on the drivers. And as long as your Bios is set to 4x agp, which I'm guessing it has to be, anywhere else where it says 8x wouldn't help or harm I'd think. Are you having any performance issues because of this? If you want a full rundown on your performace complete with tips, give Sandra a try, http://download.guru3d.com/sandra/ . It's very comprehensive.

In your BIOS, should be in the boot section ( is in mine) there is a place for a choice of PCI or AGP.... i just installed a Ge Force 4 in place of a Ge Force 2 and some how this got changed. It slowed the AGP card down so much the performance was below the Ge Force 2. Upon chousing AGP I have better performance now.You can access your BIOS by holding down your DEL or the Esc key on Boot-up. Please be very careful in this area as you can make your computer not boot.Joe W.
