September 17, 200322 yr Having flown mostly the big planes since getting FS9, I have the urge to get back into flying GA aircraft into and out of small uncontrolled airports. Since I've lost my previous fav field with FS2002 (Emma field doesn't work on FS9 I hear) I am looking for recommendations on what areas people find enjoyable for bush/short/soft/uncontrolled type airfields and just general challenging or enjoyable areas to fly smaller GA type aircraft?I'd love to check out new areas of the world as I mostly have been sticking to my native Pacific Northwest area so far. Thanks!
September 17, 200322 yr I checked out a little of Southern England before bed last night and was quite impressed with the scenery. I am not sure of the size of the airports there. The one I landed at was not too big or crowded.I mostly fly the Pacific Northwest but have embarked on a trip down to the sourthern tip of California and am currently parked at Monteray.Lake Tahoe is really cool too but may remind you too much of the Pacific Northwest.
September 17, 200322 yr Thanks for the ideas! I'm really also interested in flying from point to point, and taking off from the last place I landed, making sure to gas up when needed etc. Trying to make real trips out of it :)However I am having a problem saving flights. There is the default "last place you were" save file that doesn't seem to work for me. Everytime I load it, I start at Sea-Tac in the Cessna, no matter where I was flying and in what plane last time. Any ideas why this is? If I make my own save file it seems to work, but I haven't played around with it much.
September 17, 200322 yr My Jepp instrument/commercial textbook has a small blurb in it about "airport qualification charts". These exist for some airports that are regarded as being more challenging to get into/out of for whatever reason - terrain, etc. The blurb shows the qual chart for Telluride Airport, which from personal experience (as a pax) I can tell you is an interesting airport/environs.I did a web search on these qual charts just now, and came up with this link:http://www2.faa.gov/avr/afs/acs/web.pdfor as HTML: http://216.239.53.104/search?q=cache:DL6N3...&hl=en&ie=UTF-8That document has a list of the rest of the airports that have these charts. That might be a good list to work from in terms of challenging, small airports.I think that Alaska would be a good place to find other challenges 8^) .I would say that having the best terrain mesh you can find for a given area would enhance this experience - a lot of the stock MS terrain is dumbed down in terms of resolution, particularly in remote areas. I use Orlando Sotomayor's freeware mesh for some of California.http://mesh64.home.att.net/have fun,Dave Blevins System: Asus P8Z68 Deluxe/Gen3 mobo *** i7 2700K @ 5gHz w/ Corsair H80 cooler NVidia GTX 570 OC *** 8 GB 1600 Corsair Vengeance DRAM *** CoolerMaster HAF X case System overclocked and tuned for FSX by fs-gs.com Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog stick/throttle & CH Products Pro Pedals Various GoFlight panels *** PFC avionics stack

Please forgive my ignorance but will it work with FS 2004 or should I just go away and quit bothering people? Thanks,DonaldS
September 17, 200322 yr The mesh works for '2004 as well.BTW I keep a separate folder for my scenery stuff - outside of the FS2002 or FS2004 folders (for me it's e:FSScenery). Both sims are using the same mesh on my system (although I have to say that I haven't run FS2002 in quite a while).Dave Blevins System: Asus P8Z68 Deluxe/Gen3 mobo *** i7 2700K @ 5gHz w/ Corsair H80 cooler NVidia GTX 570 OC *** 8 GB 1600 Corsair Vengeance DRAM *** CoolerMaster HAF X case System overclocked and tuned for FSX by fs-gs.com Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog stick/throttle & CH Products Pro Pedals Various GoFlight panels *** PFC avionics stack
September 17, 200322 yr Howdy,Since I've lost my previous fav field with FS2002 (Emma field doesn't work on FS9 I hear)Not exactly true. Emma Field is still a functional scenery; it's just that a lot of the animations and SoundScape files no longer work. Oh, and of course, it does not show up in the Add-On data base (although I recently read it does show up in the new version of FSNav (4.?).
September 17, 200322 yr Well, my favorite getaways are airports 09s and 6s9- both in the PNW. For a fairly enjoyable flight, go to 6s9, set the weather on cold fronts, and take off from the default runway. Head in roughly the runway heading and you'll happen across a nice paved strip lying between a river and a town. It makes for an interesting approach, especially if you're descending from the 10,000 feet that'll keep you clear of the mountains. I like those flights, anyway. I hope you like 'em too!
September 18, 200322 yr One flight that have flown several times goes from Sitka (PASI) to Juneau, both in Alaska. Sitka is an especially nice little place, situated on a small peninsula. The approach into Juneau is quite interesting, lots of hills around. If I remember it right the instrument approach into PAJN Rwy 8 is especially tricky, with a localizer that's not in line with the runway. The landscape in this area is breathtakingly beautiful, especially in FS9!VOlker :]
September 18, 200322 yr What I do is I just save normaly eg i make a save file called NORM and everytime i finish I save to that file before I exit... since im useing simulator time whenever a sim day is over and i set it back to morning I allways set the day to the current date... I dont fly night VFR if i can avoide it.
September 18, 200322 yr >looking for recommendations on what areas people find>enjoyable for bush/short/soft/uncontrolled type airfields and>just general challenging or enjoyable areas to fly smaller GA>type aircraft?Do a search in the file Library for "Daniel Gauthier" he does some scenery for Swiss airports, particularly the smaller ones. Get Lago Terramesh and a landclass file for Switzerland and your're all set! In my opinion Switzerland and finland (fisd.nfsnordic.net) are the best freeware sceneries that I've seen. They mostly seem compatible with fs2004. Just Sion airport causes a crash to desktop (fixed by removing some of the BGL files for Sion - the ones that add the Lakes). Also, some of the Finland scenery seems to cause fs2004 to crash when in map view.Anthony Dyer
