FPS drop when I'm playing longer! How to fix this??

Featured Replies

Hello!I have this one veeeery weird problem! I start the flight, fly a while (even longer flights) and then when I'm landing, I get extremely low FPS. eg. I flew from KJFK to EGLL with London Airports addon, and when I was approaching EGLL, it produced 7fps just before touchdown. Then I exited the game, and loaded the saved landing at the point where I got low FPS before. And just a wonder: I got my locked 35fps setting. Almost, but defintely higher than 7fps.I even tried loading up VATSIM and all program I usually have up while flying, still the same result, much higher than 7fps.What might be causing this, would someone please have any idea??GreetingsKostaASUS P4C800512MB RAMATI Radeon 9700Windows XP

Uhoh...sorry I forgot to mention...FS2002.Thx

You computer specs, operating system, the panel, aircraft and other modifications which were used aswell as FSUIPC version would help anyone to isolate the problem or even make an educated guess. The symptom you describe sounds like a memory leak but FS2002 didnt really have that as a problem.JohnP 2.53 GHZ512 RAMWINXPGFORCE 4 128MB Ti4600http://homepage.eircom.net/~eamonnmca/images/logo_ba.JPGwww.bavirtual.co.uk Senior Captain Simflight.com Staff Reviewerhttp://vatsim.pilotmedia.fi/statusindicato...tor=OD1&a=a.jpg

It does seem like a memory leak...but here it goes:Intel 2.9GhzRadeon 9700512 RAMWINXPPSS 747 (today), but was happening with other products too (Airbus for example).Lots of addon scenery, in UK only LAGO Terramesh and London Airports. FSUIPC 3.03.ThanksKosta

I'm not a long hauler but do keep FS2002 open for long periods of time. I run under Windows 2000 PRO which is a very stable platform. I see lots of memory gobbled up over time when I have FS2002 open -- whether operating or minimized. This does not happen with any other application I run.Best thing to do is install a neat free utility called MaxMem. This will track your memory usage and on demand free up memory being held hostage.Put it in and monitor memory availability over time. Then click on the icon to see how much memory suddenly becomes available. I see examples routinely where I had only 25% memory free and after engaging MaxMem the number jumps to 60%.You can get this jewel at http://www.analogx.com/welcome.htmAnother interesting event is after a long time of "inactivity" FS2002 will slow to a crawl in spot view (where is was fine initially). This could be analogous to loss of frame rate. I fix this in the silliest way you can imagine. Just hold the hat switch hard over and let the view rotate continuously for a while. You can see the speed increasing with every full rotation until it is back up to normal. Like I said it's silly but it does work.Hope this is of some helpRacartronit means something, but I just can't remember what

An alternative to MaxMem is RamIdle (Get it at ZDnet or CNET).I've used this for a couple of years now when running WinME and it works beautifully. You can configure in various ways it to keep a chosen amount of RAM free. There is a free version and a pay version(I believe the pay version is RamIdle Pro)Dave

Well, I just tried it. That was not it.When I fire up Fsim, and get into the game, fs2002.exe is about 50mb, and then it starts to grow. When I was on approach to EGLL, it said over 300mb! Is that normal?Would this be a sign that I need more RAM or what? I somehow thought 512mb is going to be enough, hmmz...Although, I found out that these utils, nor only reloading the game within solves the problem. Problem only gets solved when I restart the whole game. So, anyone with some other ideas?Word Not Allowed

Two things to try:I noted that some tweaks done to FS2002 (such as the "terrain radius" tweaks) eat up RAM in a rather big way. Try renaming your FS2002.cfg to fs2002.bak Then fire up FS2002, and it will rebuild itself to the default settings. Try to fly the route and see what happens. You also mentioned add-on scenery--remember the only real way to isolate the issue from FS2002 is to see what FS2002 does without any add-ons. -John

Couple of things occur to me. First, London Airports does cost FPS particularly depending on traffic and weather. The other issue might well be heat and/or power supply related. You might want to check on your temps to make certain that they are not gradually creeping up; that might well cause a processor slow-down.Assuming, of course, it's not a memory leak.

Ok, thank you guys. Everything you wrote is possible, since I tweaked FS until no more goes, although radius tweaks are OK imo.The CPU thing could easily be. I'll be installing MBM next thing and running FS to see what happens. Will report then :)ThxKosta
