Any point in upgrading a 4200Ti?

Featured Replies

I've been following the videocard "debate" on here... what has the performance increase been on going from a 4200Ti to a 9800 or 9700 card for FS2002 and FS2004? Looking more if there will be a fps increase as I already have good CPU speed.Chris

Chris you may not gain very many FPS in switching from a Ti 4200 to a Radeon 9700 or better, but what you will gain is the ability to run anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering at high resolutions without the huge performance hit you would suffer using the Ti 4200. If image quality is important to you, go check out one of these aforementioned Radeons. Anti-aliasing + anisotropic filtering + high resolutions + steady, high frame rates = :-eek :-hah :-jumpy :-kewl-Max Cowgill

I don't think you realize just how good a card the Ti4200 is till you get rid of it. From my own experience I decided to "upgrade" to a 256MB FX5600 card from a 128MB Ti4200 which lasted all of about 30 horrible minutes when after three different driver combos I took it out and put back in the Ti4200. Therefore I would say that if you do intend to upgrade then you opt for a very top end card. Even then you need to ask yourself is it really worth it. Screw chasing frame rate numbers, In most cases I don't even look at the fps counter, my main concern is the aesthetic appearance and its ability to run smoothly. If these things are OK then I see no need in going out spending money on hardware just for the sheer hell of it. As they say If it ain't broke don't try to fix it.Regards,markyboy.

Markyboy, see my above post. The Radeon 9700/9800 are high end cards, unlike the GFFX 5600 you had the unfortunate experience of purchasing. While the old saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it" holds true, just because it ain't broke doesn't mean it can run and look better. One can purchase a Radeon 9700/9800 for $200 online at this very moment. That's $200 well-spent IMNSHO.-Max Cowgill

i recently tossed my ti4200 for an evga fx5900 128mb for 250$. results? : 2 x AA and 16 x AF, blurries are eliminated, graphics look much better, stuttering is now minimal and everything is now a little smoother with a gain of a few fps. i'm quite satisfied. that is until the P5.-Andre
