November 23, 201015 yr I think one of the age old problems of FS weather is the way it deals with visibility. If an airports METAR shows say 1 mile on the ground, whilst descending into it you will still be able to see the ground and the airport itself until you reach the top of the layer. At this point obviously the vis starts to graduate down. It's hugely unrealistic to be able to see the ground in such circumstances, then to have it suddenly disappear as you enter the viz layer. ASE deals with this reasonably well when there is fog reported in the METAR by using clouds to represent the visibility layer, so you can't see the ground from altitude (although doesn't always seem to work!) This only happens in the rare occurrence of the METAR containing a prefix for fog however. I wonder why it can't be implemented that in all cases where there is a low visibility reported, and even if there are no clouds reported, ASE cant use a layer of stratus to represent the visibility layer? Of course the stratus could be used in conjunction with a regular low viz layer, and would simply serve the purpose of hiding the ground. Even leaving the "disable fs haze layer" unchecked doesn't really help, as the haze layer you get that way is ugly and almost completely transparent anyway.Hopefully you get the idea of what I'm saying! I think that everyone would agree that even if cloud wasn't reported, but the visibility was lower than 10SM, this would provide a much more realistic experience. I feel like tearing my hair out every time I'm on approach to an airport and can see the runway clearly from ten+ miles away, only to have it disappear suddenly as I enter the invisible low viz. NOTE: Don't confuse my point with one regarding visibility graduation/smoothing as it's not. Also I'm not referring to the change FS displays in sky colour as it changes between the 10SM barrier. November 25, 201015 yr I agree, and especially since I am so aware of it, the visibility layer really bugs me. I like the idea of using stratus clouds for visibility; perhaps if some nice stratus texture particularly useful in this case were developed, I guess that this could give some nice results.. Don't know about programming limitations and the like of course :) Best regards, Alexander Rietveld
