October 24, 200322 yr Commercial Member Windows ME is a virus masqerading as an operating system. Upgrade to XP as fast as you can...Ryan Ryan MaziarzFor fastest support, please submit a ticket at http://support.precisionmanuals.com
October 24, 200322 yr Well gee, that is helpful knowledge :-rollAnyway, the 98/ME 56.16 drivers are up at Guru3D http://download.guru3d.com/detonator/Its not the WHQL stamped one though, so I would suspect maybe 1 or 2 days to go before the ones dated newer is up :)
October 24, 200322 yr You know, while it might have been a less than helpful answer, from a technical point of view it could not have been more appropriate. WinME was(is) a disaster from the start. Additionally, mainstream supports ends for this product on December 31. That means MS is going to not view ME as a native product and will only secondarily support it and will not issue critical updates and the like for it. The network I administer has users who frequently access their accounts from home PCs and cannot do so without current security upgrades from MS. Generally, this means they have to have Win2k or WinXP with current service packs, upgrades and patches. If they want to access their accounts from home they can but only with the latest, most secure tools to do so.I fully understand that many people cannot afford the cost of equipment upgrades and buying new operating systems. That said, those folks need to understand the tradeoff they need to make when they cannot upgrade. Keeping WinME might be a decision that means up to date functionality is not possible. From a security point of view, there is no way I would go on line with anything but SuSE Linux or the most current version of an advanced MS operating system. I use Win2kPro on my personal machine and it is up to date with SP4 and all current patches. Since Win2k is directly supported until 2006, I feel little need to migrate to XP for no real new features. Read: I don't need the pretty face. The question of video drivers is central to this entire argument. Video card manufacturers are not obligated to support "end-of-life" operating systems and generally do so grudgingly. I visited the site of the link you provided and the total downloads by ME users is minimal compared to those with Win2k and XP - not a shocking discovery. Frankly, I am surprised there is any support at all for ME, you can bet it is grudging at best.Your kind help is appreciated, I am sure, but the originator of this thread should give serious consideration to getting the resources together to upgrade to AT LEAST Win2kPro, if not to XP. Right now he is using an operating system that has more problems than it is worth.Terry
October 25, 200322 yr Well concerning the support issue going away and all that, sure it will be a good idea to think about upgrading sometime along the way.Still generalising can be very misleading when its about how computer software works. So many times we see these things mention like: "these drivers run like crap" or.. "FS9 runs so bad". While this might be true to one person, another person can have it running pretty well.Personally I have been running Windows 3.11, Win95, 98 and 98SE before ME and XP. I can tell you with 110% certainty that apart from XP, Windows ME has previously been the most stabile and smooth running OS I ever had of those above mentioned.Just dont get the ME-slander people have always been doing, since it has always given me good service and use thats all :)
