January 18, 201115 yr After rearranging my computer room with new computer desk/bookcase I was left with very few choices for computer cases. Seems that Ethan Allen's computer desk leaves you with room for a 15" computer tower, which pretty much limits me to a mATX board/case. I've had to part with my prized AMD system and after researching, have ordered the following parts for my new build. MB ASUS|P8P67-M PRO P67 LGA1155 RCPU INTEL|CORE I7 2600K 3.4G 8M R8GB GSKIll 4Gx2 C7 1333 7-7-7-21 @ 1.5V Seasonic 760W 80plus gold power supplyGigabyte GV-R587UD-1GD Radeon HD5870 ( No matter what I tried with my GTX 460 I could never get it to work well with MS Trainsim, even tried a friends 480gtx with neg results, hence the ati card)Corsair H50 CPU CoolerCorsair Force CSSD-F160GB SSD (Windows 7 professional 64bit on this drive)OCZ Vertex 2 120GB SSD for FSXWD Caviar Black 1TB Storage DriveCoolermaster Elite 341 mATX computer case. Should be an interesting build, I've been working with the case the last few days planning my cable routing and am pretty pleased with the case so far. Surprisingly the 5870 fits with room to spareMatt
January 18, 201115 yr Hi Matt,You are going to have a ton of tweaking to do to get that 5870 to run in FSX like an nVidia card. Personally, I would've recommended a GTX570. Your ram is very slow. I would've recommended 8GB 1600MHz CL6 @ 1.65V, and run it at 1600MHz CL7 @ 1.5V.
January 19, 201115 yr Author Hi Alex, The 5870 is a leftover from my AMD build, I do agree with you though that the 500 series cards are much better for FSX. That being said, I have to give a huge thank you to ******* for his shader mod and his tweak utility, and for all of his hard work helping everyone out. The card worked really well on that system. I think the main reason it worked so well is that my monitors native resolution is 1280x1024. I hope to move up to a 580 gtx and larger monitor in the future though. As for the ram, being that these boards are new I decided to play safe and go with a certified ram for my board. I'm going to get everything up and running, install all my software and allow the computer to "burn in" before I clock it. I'm sure once more and more P67 boards come out, it's only a matter of time until manufacturers come out with a good 1600 ram at cas 6 or 7 &1.5v I'm going to have this system for awhile, so that will be a future upgrade I'm certain of. Thanks again for your input,Matt
