February 8, 201115 yr Hi Gang,Just wanted to point out a possible bug in setting the winds aloft levels in FSX and ASE B642 in "Standard" mode.I fly usually around the FL200 to FL300 areas, and I have noticed on occasion that the winds and temperatures aloft were not matching ASE. My first thoughts were SimConnect or FSX or FSUIPC, but I have eliminated those possibilities as I have no problems in areas where the ground level is at or near sea level. I used KCEC as my first example (see Fig 1). As you can see, all the levels are set properly regarding temperatures and winds aloft (FSUIPC Weather Set program used).FIGURE 1Now, I noticed the problems when I was flying over the Canadian prairies where the ground level is much higher than Sea Level. For my example, I'm over CYQL, field altitude about 3000ft ASL (see Figure 2). As you can see, the temperatures and winds aloft are not plotted properly for the levels between FL180 to FL240. In this example, the levels for FL240-FL300 are depicted twice (357/53) and ASEs FL180-FL240 winds of 351/40 are missing.FIGURE 2So, somewhere, ASE isn't setting that level properly when the ground level gets too high. February 8, 201115 yr Hi,The breaks between wind levels is not exactly at 3k, 6k, 9k etc. That is why WeatherSet is off a bit. Also, read the wind in FS, not in WeatherSet.
February 9, 201115 yr Author OK, I understand that winds aren't exactly at 3k, 6k, 9k etc. I understand that and wasn't concerned about that. (I'm one of your beta testers for this program, so I understand the program and where it came from). :wink:My problem was as shown in figure 2. The winds shown on ASE for 18K should be "351@40 -24.6C" and at 24K is "357@53 -36.8C"In WeatherSet, the winds from 17976ft to 23976ft (station#5 highlighted in screen shot) is 352@56 which is identical to the next layer above (FL240-FL300). The temperature is -36 at 17976ft (line #4 on temperature in WeatherSet) which is also identical to the next layer above. If you follow the sequence of wind layers from the ground up, you will notice that the "351@40" from ASE is never plotted. In FSX, I can confirm that this is also the case (reproducible)...that is how I noticed the error when I was expecting a lighter headwind, and I was getting 15 knots more at 19000ft.This does not happen where the land elevation is near or at sea level (like KSEA or KJFK, etc). It happens when the land gets higher (like CYYC, etc). All the other layers are plotted properly except the 18000-24000 foot level as far as I could test. Devin CYOW
February 9, 201115 yr Author OK Jim, I did a full re-install of ASE and the levels seem to be setting properly as of now with the limited testing I have done. I will do more flights and keep an eye on it. It may have been a bad setup.I'll let you know.Devin Devin CYOW
