February 10, 201115 yr HiI remember reading someplace about changing a value when the shader folder is rebuilt. Can someone please explain the logic behind this. Also, I have rebuilt mine a couple times without adding an entry in the cfg, so what value would be used in that case?ThxE
February 11, 201115 yr Hi Eric,In the graphics section of the fsx.cfg you can have an entry SHADER_CACHE_VERSION=1. If you change the number to anything else it will rebuild the shader cache. You can change it from 1 to 2, and then back to 1 again later and it will rebuild. As long as the number is different from the last time it was rebuilt. The Shader folder is in Username\Appdata\local\microsoft\FSX\Shaders. The contents of this folder is what gets rebuilt.I have seen this folder get very large before, i think from rebuilding too many times, but im not sure. I would recommend making a note of how large the shaders folder is, then cutting it to a safe location and restart fsx and let it rebuild naturally. If you delete the shaders folder it will rebuild by itself without needing any fsx.cfg entries. I think this is a cleaner way of doing it, but make a backup first.David Ranieri. :smile:Edit: No value needed if youve already rebuilt it.

February 11, 201115 yr Hi Jim,Youve probably already started rebuilding, but i just wanted to know... did you delete the shaders folder or the contents within that folder. You should delete the 5 folders within the shaders folder. I should have been more specific. Anyway, a rebuild is always good. Looking forward to the 737 also. :( David.CAUTION: IF REBUILDING SHADER CACHE, DELETE THE FIVE FOLDER WITHIN THE SHADERS FOLDER, NOT THE SHADERS FOLDER ITSELF
February 11, 201115 yr Author Ok I understand thank you! What is there to gain from rebuilding?thanks again
February 11, 201115 yr Ok I understand thank you! What is there to gain from rebuilding? The shader cache (appdata\local\microsoft\fsx\shaders) is built using the information from the shadersHLSL folder, which is in the root fsx folder. If you make modifications to the contents of the shadersHLSL folder, then you need to force the shader cache to rebuild itself. Changing the shader_cache_version in the fsx.cfg is the common way of forcing the rebuild, but i prefer to delete the contents of the shaders folder as i have noticed it getting bigger over time with older version files. If you try any of the shader mods that are available, then youll have to rebuild the cache, otherwise if your just tidying up or it doesnt matter too much.David :(
