FSX SSD Question/Advice

Featured Replies

Hello!Looking for some advice regarding an install of FSX on an SSD. I currently have my OS and FSX running on a Corsair 128GB SSD. However, I've found that I'm starting to run a bit low on space (about 24GB free) and have my eye on some Orbx scenery. Obviously I'll need more room (maybe not right now, but eventually).I'm considering buying another duplicate Corsair (128GB) SSD. My question is that when I install it, should I just put my FSX install on one SSD, or should I run both in a RAID 0 configuration? Both being SSD's not sure of performance differences having the OS and FSX on different drives (albeit both SSD's) or running both in a RAID.Thanks for any advice.Cheers,

That is a tuff one only because I do not like to see the OS on raid otherwise raid would be the way to go. your best option would be to buy two more drives and raid two and put the oS on its own.Second best would be to put the OS on a mechanical (you can buy a 1TB cheap) and raid the two SSD.Third, put OS on one and FSX on the other. If going this route you may want to look at a lrager SSD.Remember not to exceed 90% of the capacity on a SSD drive or maximum 115GB in your case; and 50% of a mechanical drive.

Gary,Thanks. You gave me an idea though, kind of a hybrid between options 1 and 3... I think I'm going to look at buying a 64GB SSD, just for OS, and use my current 128GB SSD for FSX. I already have a 1TB Caviar Black that everything not OS/FSX is on now. That should give me enough flexibility/expansion room for FSX and allow me to keep my OS on an SSD as well.I was originally looking at just going the 256GB SSD, but costs are definitely not linear... :P.Do you see a problem/performance issue with the OS on a separate 64G SSD, FSX on a separate 128G SSD, and everything else on the Caviar Black Mechanical drive? Thanks again!Cheers,

No issue other than I would be leary of running applications from the mechanical. Mechanical is ok for storage but with the SSD's you should have ACHI set. Mechanical does not like ACHI and there would be performance issues in attempting to run from it.

Understood. I don't think it will be a problem. The applications I have (that I run currently) from my mechanical are none that would really suffer from a performance hit (I'm not one to watch MS Word open with a stopwatch, trying to get those extra milliseconds before I can start typing :) )Anyway, I've been running everything but OS and FSX from the SSD with everything else on the Caviar for the past 10-11 months. No noticeable hits in performance and want to keep it that way. I was just worried/curious how to proceed with an expansion on the SSD side.Looks like the 64/128 SSD's will be the solution... Just not looking forward to ANOTHER reinstall of Win7/FSX/Kitchen Sink...Thank you for your advice, I appreciate it!Cheers,
